Filter by:Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is an alternative restorative technique for dental caries, applying the partial caries tissue removal philosophy using hand instruments, relative cotton rolls isolation, immediate restoration with Glass Ionomer Cements (GIC) and avoiding local anesthesia. The chosen material for this study will be the High Viscosity Glass Ionomer Cement (HVGIC) due to its unique physical-chemical properties as well as its applicability in challenging clinical situations where other materials would not be adequate. Although there are substantial evidences regarding GIC properties, information about GIC (with different costs) longevity is still weak. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of ART restorations performed with low-cost HVGIC in cavitated dentine carious lesions in primary and permanent molars. This will be a multicenter randomized controlled double-blind (patient and operator) clinical trial performed with 680 primary and/or permanent molars in children between 4 and 9 years old presenting cavitated dentine carious lesions in occlusal and occlusal-proximal surfaces. The tooth will be considered as the unit sample, which will be randomly allocated to the groups through a generated random list numbers and distributed in dark sealed envelopes opened only by dental assistants. Teeth in the test group will be submitted to restorative treatment with HVGIC Vitro Molar and those in the control group with HVGIC Fuji IX. The restoration effectiveness will be assessed by means of both clinical and bitewing x-rays control after 6 and 12 months.
This is a prospective, single-centre clinical study to monitor caries lesion activity in orthodontic patients with the Calcivis System over a 12 week period. Dentists will identify patients who have had dental appliances in place for a minimum of 12 months and have visible white spot lesions on the anterior surfaces of incisors and / or canines at de-bond. Following de-bond, images of the tooth surface will be taken with the Calcivis System. Presence or absence of elevated luminescence on the images will indicate activity / inactivity. Only patients with at least one tooth identified as active with the Calcivis System will continue in the study and be followed up at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks de-bond. Images of the active teeth will be taken with the Calcivis System as before, at each follow-up visit. The percentage of teeth showing luminescence using the Calcivis System will be calculated and summarised for all subjects for each post-baseline visit, and additionally by Investigator. This will then be summarised over all subjects for each post-baseline visit.

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease effecting majority of the human population.One of the etiological factor causing dental caries is salivary mutans streptococci. Reducing the levels of this bacteria in the saliva can significantly reduce the incidence of dental caries. A non-invasive intervention, such as the administration of probiotics reduced the salivary mutans streptococci levels.
This will be a single-centre, randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled, 6-treatment, 4-period crossover, incomplete block design, in situ caries study in healthy adults who wear a removable bilateral mandibular partial denture. The denture will be modified to accommodate 4 gauze-covered specimens of human dental enamel (4x3mm) that have been previously demineralized in vitro to form either S or low-R lesions (2 specimens of each lesion type will be used with each participant). After 14 days of twice daily product use off-site, the 2 S lesion specimens will be removed at the study site, with the remaining 2 low-R lesion specimens removed at the study site after a further 14 days of product use. To determine the remineralization ability of the treatments, all specimens will be analyzed by transverse microradiography (TMR) and enamel fluoride uptake (EFU), with the S lesions additionally analyzed by surface micro hardness (SMH) and the low-R lesions additionally analyzed by quantitative light fluorescence (QLF).
This study was a randomized clinical trial lasting for 24 months in two study sites, Hong Kong (water fluoridated) and Guangzhou (non-fluoridated area). A total of 534 subjects will be recruited from elderly social centers located in different districts in the two study sites (260 & 274). Baseline clinical examination was conducted by a single calibrated examiner in the social centers using an intra-oral LED light, mouth mirrors and probes. Subjects were randomly allocated into two study groups and receive interventions accordingly. Follow-up examinations at 6-month intervals were carried out to assess the clinical outcomes, i.e. whether new root caries developed and whether the active root caries found at baseline become arrested. Results of this study could provide the much needed evidence to guide the dental professionals in Hong Kong and China, and possibly worldwide in deciding on the most appropriate intervention for the prevention and management of this common dental disease of the older adults.
Triple-blind randomized controlled trial with two parallel arms conducted between 2012 and 2014. Children 2-3 years old, from 28 rural public preschools, located in low socioeconomic areas of Chile were invited to participate. Oral health education component was given to children, parents and educators, twice yearly. A new toothbrush and toothpaste for each child was delivered to the parents at baseline and in each of the follow-up visits. Given the clinical damage caused by errors commonly made during the dosage and handling of glass ionomer cement (GIC) of high viscosity powder-liquid type, the use of encapsulated ionomer has been recommended for final restorations. However, the initial cost of the encapsulated MIC is higher when compared to the material handled manually. The objective of this randomized study is to (1) reveal cost-effective in the long run, the encapsulated CIV Riva Self Cure and Equia used as a restorative material in atraumatic restorations (Atraumatic Restorative Treatment), (2) assess whether the type of cavity (occlusal and occlusal-proximal) influences the longevity of atraumatic restorations using encapsulated IC, (3) assess whether the child's caries experience influences the longevity of atraumatic restorations with GIC encapsulated. Children, ages 3 and 7, will be selected in the Tietê-SP municipality. Randomization will be performed in a stratified manner by the conditions: type of cavity and caries experience. 122 ART restorations are performed using encapsulated CIV - Riva Self Cure - SDI and Equia -CG Corp. The restorations will be evaluated after 6, 12 and 18 months by two trained examiners blind to the groups (intra- and inter-rater agreement above 0.7). To verify the survival of the restorations will be used Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank test. To evaluate the association between longevity and variable Cox regression test will be applied. For the cost analysis will be used analysis of variance.
Objectives: Occlusal surfaces of erupting permanent molars are highly prone to caries. Self-assembling peptide (P11-4) has proven to enhance biomimetic mineralization of early carious lesions. Aim of this study was to evaluate safety, clinical applicability and effect of using P11-4 (Curodontâ„¢ Repair) in non-invasive treatment of early occlusal lesions. Methods: 70 patients with active early occlusal lesions (ICDAS-II:1-3) on first or second permanent molars at eruption will be allocated in this randomized, controlled, single blinded study to test (Curodontâ„¢ Repair+Duraphat®) or control (Duraphat®) groups.
