Filter by:Along with population ageing, the association of chronic conditions such as Alzheimer's Disease and Related Syndromes (ADRS) and diabetes mellitus is increasing in clinical practice. According to ADRS severity, guidelines of diabetes care may be adapted for a personalized monitoring and treatment. The consequences on diabetes complications are not known and can also threaten dementia progression. Based on a nationwide healthcare reimbursement database, the present study aimed to compare diabetes care and the incidence of acute complications between patients with or without ADRS, in a longitudinal perspective focusing on the pivotal period of ADRS identification by the healthcare system.
Inappropriate antipsychotic prescribing is a key quality indicator by which clinical outcomes might be monitored and improved in LTC. A multi component intervention to reduce inappropriate antipsychotic prescribing was evaluated in ten Canadian long-term care facilities.
This project was designed to test a model targeted intervention for dementia caregivers telephone program consisting of both psychoeducation and behavioral activation components to reduce the burden of caregivers. The program is delivered by telephone to increase accessibility and sustainability for caregivers.
The lack of efficacious research-based interventions for such vulnerable older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/RD) and their caregivers (CGs) is a significant public health problem. Caregiving of sexual/gender minority older adults with AD/RD is of concern due to social stigma, marginalization, and isolation, which may be barriers to sustaining caregiving. It is necessary and timely to translate evidence-based culturally adaptable interventions for this underserved and stigmatized population. Reducing Disability in Alzheimer's Disease (RDAD) has been evaluated in a randomized controlled trial and has shown to successfully train community-dwelling CR (care receiver)-CG dyads to increase the physical activity and functioning of individuals with AD/RD and their CGs and to teach CGs techniques for managing behavioral symptoms of CRs. RDAD consequently decreases stress of CGs, delays institutionalization of CRs, and increases health related quality of life (HRQOL) of CRs and CGs. Thus, this study will evaluate the effect of the standard RDAD among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) CRs with AD/RD and their CGs, and this study will test a personalized intervention tailored to better respond to distinct risks experienced by CGs and LGBT CRs with AD/RD, addressing unique sexual/gender minority CG risk factors (e.g., identity management, stigma-related adverse or traumatic life events, and lack of social support).
This intervention is designed to promote enhanced use of compensation strategies including calendar and task list use, and organization systems, as well as increased engagement with brain health activities including physical exercise, cognitive activities, and stress reduction.
This study compares the efficacy of 2 doses of brexpiprazole with placebo in participants with agitation associated with dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
Palliative and hospice care in advanced dementia: experiences of care givers and benefit of a brochure serving as a decision-making aid Aims: 1. Designing a brochure serving as an information tool and decision-making aid used to answer questions concerning palliative and hospice care for care-givers of persons with advanced dementia. The brochure shall demonstrate the possibilities and offerings of palliative and hospice care and shall serve to inform about the advanced stages of dementia, the legal basic principles in decision making and ethical problems, treatment options and (palliative) treatment goals. 2. Survey of the palliative, palliative medical and hospice care of persons with advanced dementia in ambulatory settings, as well as in residential geriatric care and the experiences of the care-givers. By examining persons with dementia and inspecting the care documents and where applicable the medical files it is to be evaluated: - which procedures of palliative and hospice care are practically implemented in ambulatory care and in residential geriatric care, - which symptoms the persons with dementia suffer from and how those symptoms are (or are not) treated, - to what extend caregivers are informed about relevant aspects - how caregivers assess care and which problems, needs and requests exist. 3. Piloting phase for the brochure. To test the comprehensibility and the acceptance of the brochure a study is planned. The caregivers are asked for their opinion whether the brochure is helpful. It is recorded if the reading of the brochure gets the caregivers to engage actively in the participative decision making process.
An education intervention to promote medication reviews and interdisciplinary discussions within long-term care facilities with the aim of improving medication regimen among residents with severe dementia
This study seeks to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NA-83 in subjects with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's Disease
This study investigated the short-term effect of both harmonic techniques and supporting cushions on muscle tone, range of motion, pain and daily care activities in 22 patients with moderate to severe paratonia. The study consisted of two parts, each part was conducted during one week. In the first part of the study the short-term effect of supporting cushions was examined; in the second part of the study the additional short-term effect of harmonic techniques was investigated.
