RBANS-H in Older Patients Before and After Cochlear Implantation: A Protocol for a Prospective Study

The cognitive profile of older adults with a severe to profound hearing impairment is determined by means of the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status, adjusted for Hearing impaired subjects (RBANS-H) before and after cochlear implantation. In this prospective, longitudinal study the participants are tested preoperatively, at six months and twelve months postoperatively and from then on yearly up to 10 years after implantation. In addition to the RBANS-H an audiological examination and an semistructured interview is conducted concerning the cochlear implant use and the self-reliance of the patient and subjective questionnaires are filled out by the subjects to assess quality of life and hearing benefit.

A Phase 2b Study of SPI-1005 to Prevent Acute Noise Induced Hearing Loss

SPI-1005 is a novel oral drug that contains a glutathione peroxidase mimetic (ebselen) that will be tested in subjects with a history of NIHL at risk for additional NIHL. The goal of this multi-center Phase 2b study is to determine whether SPI-1005 is effective in reducing an acute NIHL in this affected population. In this Phase 2b study subjects with prior NIHL will be enrolled and exposed to a calibrated sound challenge (CSC) that induces a slight acute NIHL.

Coupler-Based Hearing-Aid Fitting Approach for Experienced Users

The overall aim of the study is to compare the verification accuracy and hearing-aid outcomes between the traditional, fitting approach where the patient is present during the visit and a coupler-based fitting approach where the patient is not present and mailed their hearing aids. If the coupler-based fitting protocol tested in this study as effective as the traditional fitting protocol, then patients receiving replacement hearing aids may circumvent a face-to-face visit.

Before they are born, babies are protected from hearing very loud noises by their mother's bodies. After delivery, they are exposed to many loud noises that are potentially harmful. These noises happen in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The purpose of this research project is to test the fit and the ease-of-use of a new device that may protect infant's hearing in the NICU.

Perception and Equilibrium After Cochlear Implantation

The cochlear implant is an electrical hearing aid that restores the perception of surrounding sounds and speech intelligibility in profoundly deaf patients. During surgery, the labyrinthine break necessary for insertion into the cochlea of the implantable part may cause a malfunction of the vestibular system which can induce dizziness, balance and perception (of the gravitational vertical) disorders. Vestibular compensation and new sonic interactions could alter the balance control and the visual and postural spatial orientation perceptions. The usual treatment includes the monitoring of the patient's quality of life, of the vestibular function and of hearing. This study adds an assessment of spatial orientation and of posture.
