Filter by:Prosody is the melody and rhythm of speech, it is used to refer to the supra segmental aspects of speech including pitch, loudness and duration. Variations in these features achieve different prosodic functions and are perceived by the listener as meaningful changes. The role of prosody in language acquisition and effective communication is documented in research. Nevertheless, prosodic intervention in children with hearing impairment received less attention compared to other speech and language areas. The aim of this study is to adapt the "prosody treatment program", an evidence based rehabilitation program, and to detect the efficacy of its activities in improving the prosodic skills of Egyptian hearing impaired children. The "prosody treatment program" is an evidence-based practice targeting receptive and expressive prosodic skills in addition to speech production, intelligibility, pragmatics and phonology. The program is applied using a systematic approach of providing cues following the principles adapted from dynamic temporal and tactile cueing (DTTC) for speech motor learning to help accelerate the child's learning of the prosodic skills targeted in this program. The program was translated to Arabic and adapted to be suitable for the Egyptian children.
Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic disabilities in the older adult population and affects their quality of life. Hearing aid use can improve one's quality of life by increasing a person's ability to detect, differentiate and locate sound, and improve speech recognition. Several factors seem to reduce motivation to use a hearing aid. Fears of exclusion and shame due to hearing loss are major deterrents to hearing aid use. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counselling style aimed at creating desire in patients to change their behavior. There have been pilot studies that suggest one-on-one MI can increase hearing aid use, but other pilot studies found the reverse hence the evidence is inconclusive. The effectiveness of group MI therapy is also being investigated in MI research. While results in group MI research are promising, studies investigating group MI have been limited to substance abuse.
Hearing loss and cognitive impairment both appear in elderly patients. The goal was to use a modified screening method added to already established cognitive tests to obtain a standardized test for detection of cognitive impairment in patients with hearing loss. The aim of this study is to collect data with neuropsychological tests using questionnaires and to determine cognitive impairment in patients with hearing loss. The collected data will be evaluated using SPSS 23. The corrected item-total correlation and item difficulty of the item DemTectEar will be assessed by item analysis / Cronbachs' Alpha. For further evaluation and comparisons two-sided t-tests with a level of significance 0.05 or Mann-Whitney-U-tests will be performed.
An unpublished study conducted at Toulouse University Hospital revealed that 30% of implanted children with Autism Spectrum Disorders abandon their implant, while 70% of them keep it. The aim of this study is to evaluate the causes of this disparity, which is much greater than in children with cochlear implants without associated Autism Spectrum Disorders. Our problem is as follows: do the sensory hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity of deaf children with Autism Spectrum Disorders have an effect on the expected results after a cochlear implantation from a language and auditory reaction point of view?
The purpose of this study is to develop and test a multicomponent hearing care intervention for the PACE staff members in order to learn more about communication and engagement.
This is a Phase 1b, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-dose, multicenter, safety study of FX-322, administered by intratympanic injection, in adults with severe sensorineural hearing loss.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the functional benefits of frequency compression vs no frequency compression or fitted to hearing loss in severe-profound hearing impaired adults with high frequency hearing losses. Thus, assessing whether hearing aids for this patient population can be adapted to improve speech perception.
The objective of this randomized controlled study was to demonstrate whether fetal hearing can be assessed in utero.
This is a prospective study designed to evaluate the safety and performance of the HiResTM Ultra Cl HiFocusTM MS Electrode and HiResTM Ultra 3D Cl HiFocusTM MS Electrode (Ultra X) under normal conditions of use as it is approved for this device.
This is an open-label, multi-centre study in subjects with a genetically confirmed mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA)Leu(UUR) m.3243A>G mutation who completed study KH176-202. In the KH176-203 study subjects will be receiving KH176 100 mg BID or KH176 50 mg bid in die (BID) (as determined by the investigator based on safety / tolerability considerations) for a year, thereby ensuring continued treatment with KH176 after study KH176-202. A final follow-up visit is scheduled 4 weeks after the intake of the last dose of study medication for patients not rolling over into the compassionate use program. Primary safety data and secondary efficacy (endpoint) data will be monitored and reviewed every three months by an independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) to evaluate potential risks and benefits.
