Study to Education Childhood Cancer Survivors About Survivorship Care

The proposed study is part of a career development award. The first two phases of research involve collaborating with adult survivors of childhood cancer representing both sexes and three ethnic/racial groups (African American, Hispanic, and White). THe collaboration will focus upon developing educational material that is helpful in teaching survivors about health risks related to cancer treatments and about survivorship care. The third phase is a randomized controlled trial that will randomly (like a flip of coin)place survivors into one of two groups. One group will meet in -person with a group leader three times, once each week over three weeks. The other group will receive an information packet that contains websites, books, and resources similar to content provided in-person within a group format to the other group. The goal is to help adult survivors get involved in specialized healthcare so they can remain healthy. This involves getting a copy of their medical record to understand what treatments they received and working with health providers to get an individualized survivorship care plan.

The Effect of Walking Intervention on Sleep Related Symptom Distress in Pediatric Oncology Patients

Specific aims: Control group(2010/1~2011/6): Aim 1: Describe the patterns of "fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain" in children with cancer from perspectives of children and their parents over the course of one cycle (five days) of inpatient chemotherapy (CXT). Aim 2: Determine, at various time points (during they are hospitalization various four times), the associations between fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain over the course of four cycles (there are five days in each cycle) of CTX in children with cancer. Aim 3: Examine the associations between a symptom cluster of fatigue, sleep disturbance, pain, child reported Quality of Life for Children with Cancer (QOLCC), parent reported uncertainty and QOL, and biomarkers over the course of four cycles of CXT in children with cancer. Intervention group(2011/7~2012/12): Aim 4: To test an intervention program (two 20-minute sessions of walking around the nurse's station daily, five days a cycle) to reduce the symptoms of fatigue and pain and increase quality of sleep.

Online Problem Solving Skills Training

Parents of children newly diagnosed with cancer experience depression and anxiety, especially in the first several months of treatment. Bright IDEAS, an 8-session problem-solving skills training (PSST) program has been used in studies with more than 900 mothers including more than 125 monolingual Spanish-speaking mothers. It has been shown to significantly decrease mothers' distress and to particularly benefit Latina immigrants. This past spring, the NCI/NIH designated Bright IDEAS as a Research-Tested Intervention Program and has included it in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. To date, Bright IDEAS has been available to mothers at only a few cancer centers with specially trained personnel. This proposal is designed to bring Bright IDEAS on-line to make it available to mothers and fathers 24/7 anywhere with Internet access. The investigators will carefully analyze acceptability and use to gain insight into the most promising ways of disseminating interventions like Bright IDEAS using Internet, Internet II, and other emerging technologies.

Identifying the post-transplantation phase wherein neutrophils recover their ability to release NETs could shed new light on the mechanism responsible for the increased susceptibility to infection among these patients and aid in improving their prophylactic antimicrobial treatment. Therefore, we aim to examine neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation, in relation to other neutrophil functions like chemotaxis, superoxide production, hydrogen peroxide production, and the presence of myeloperoxidase, in pediatric patients undergoing autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
