Dermatological reactions can cause significant physical and psycho-social discomfort to patients. In the present study, the investigators evaluated the effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) ointment on EGFR inhibitor-related skin side effects (ERSEs).
In this study patient's will receive the medicine Xofigo which is a radioactive drug that is FDA approved to treat prostate cancer that has spread to the bones. Xofigo has not previously been tested to treat lung cancer that has spread to the bones. Your doctors are studying the effects, good and bad, of Xofigo when used to treat lung cancer that has spread to the bones.
The objective of this phase III trial is to establish statistical equivalence in terms of efficacy (best overall response rate [ORR], proportion of patients with complete response [CR] plus partial response [PR]) until 18 weeks of first-line treatment with BI 695502 plus chemotherapy versus Avastin® plus chemotherapy followed by maintenance monotherapy with either BI 695502 or Avastin®.
There is a growing body of evidence that implicates inflammation as a mechanism of disease progression and reduced survival in patients with advanced cancer. Elevated c-reactive protein levels have been shown to be associated with reduced performance status, specific cancer related symptoms and reduced overall survival. C-reactive protein levels are a surrogate for IL-6 expression. IL-6 is part of an inflammatory signature predicting cancer recurrence. VeriStrat® is a multivariate test which measures protein expression related to a host/tumor interaction mediated by inflammation. The investigators hope to examine the relationship between quality of life outcomes per FACT-L survey and correlate them with changes in c-reactive protein levels and the VeriStrat® status. The hypothesis of this study is that the remarkable survival benefit in the Temel study is mediated by reduced inflammation with improvement of symptom control.

This clinical trial studies a palliative care intervention in improving symptom control and quality of life in patients with stage II-IV non-small cell lung cancer and their family caregivers. Palliative care programs can provide patients and their caregivers with information on how to manage their symptoms, maintain health and well-being, and access supportive care services. An interdisciplinary palliative care model may effectively link lung cancer patients to the appropriate supportive care services in a timely fashion.
