Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Non Small Cell Lung Cancer That Has Been Completely Removed by Surgery

RATIONALE: Specialized radiation therapy that delivers a high dose of radiation directly to the tumor may kill more tumor cells and cause less damage to normal tissue. Giving radiation therapy after surgery may kill any tumor cells that remain after surgery. It is not yet known whether giving radiation therapy after surgery is more effective than no radiation therapy in treating patients with non-small cell lung cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying radiation therapy to see how well it works compared to no radiation therapy in treating patients with non-small cell lung cancer that has been completely removed by surgery.

Erlotinib and Cetuximab in Treating Patients With Advanced Solid Tumors With Emphasis on Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

RATIONALE: Erlotinib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Giving erlotinib together with cetuximab may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of erlotinib and cetuximab and to see how well they work in treating patients with advanced solid tumors or progressive or recurrent stage III or stage IV non-small cell lung cancer.

Chemotherapy With or Without Bevacizumab in Treating Patients With Stage IB, Stage II, or Stage IIIA Non-small Cell Lung Cancer That Was Removed By Surgery

This randomized phase III trial studies chemotherapy and bevacizumab to see how well they work compared to chemotherapy alone in treating patients with stage IB, stage II, or stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer that was removed by surgery. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Bevacizumab also may stop the growth of non-small cell lung cancer by blocking the growth of new blood vessels necessary for tumor growth. It is not yet known whether chemotherapy is more effective with or without bevacizumab in treating non-small cell lung cancer.

Effect of Celecoxib on Survival in Patients With Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Receiving Chemotherapy

The primary purpose of the study is to investigate if daily treatment with celecoxib, an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2, can prolong survival in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who receive anticancer chemotherapy as their primary treatment. Secondary endpoints of the study are: health-related quality of life, toxicity, cardiovascular events, progression-free survival, and biological markers (VEGF, proteomics).

Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Volociximab may also stop the growth of non-small cell lung cancer by blocking blood flow to the tumor. Erlotinib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Giving volociximab together with erlotinib may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving volociximab together with erlotinib works in treating patients with stage III or stage IV non-small cell lung cancer.

Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Celecoxib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Giving celecoxib after radiation therapy and chemotherapy may kill any tumor cells that remain after radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Sometimes, after radiation therapy and chemotherapy, the tumor may not need additional treatment until it progresses. In this case, observation may be sufficient. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying celecoxib to see how well it works compared to observation in treating patients who have undergone radiation therapy and chemotherapy for stage II or stage III non-small cell lung cancer.
