Abdominal Belt Use to Treat Low Back Pain

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of an abdominal belt in the treatment of chronic mechanical-postural low back pain. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was carried out, involving 60 consecutively selected patients with chronic low back pain randomly allocated to an intervention group (use of abdominal belt) and control group (non-use of abdominal belt). Patients were evaluated at the baseline of the study (T0) as well as 1 (T1), 3 (T3) and 6 months (T6) after the inclusion. The patients were assessed for: pain (VAS); functional capacity (Roland Morris), patient satisfaction (Likert scale); and number of anti-inflammatory pills ingested. Intention-to-treat analysis was also used. Hypothesis - abdominal belt will improve pain in chronic low back pain patients

A Comparison of Two Different Methods of Physical Therapy to Treat Acute and Subacute Low Back Pain

Recent research has shown that classifying patients with low back pain into treatment subgroups results in better improvements than treating all patients with low back pain the same. However, physical therapists may use different types of information to determine how to classify their patients. One method uses patient characteristics that have been shown by research to predict good results from a certain type of treatment. Another method uses specific impairments that the physical therapist identifies in a clinical exam to determine which treatment to provide. It is not currently known if one of these methods is better than the other. The purpose of this study is to determine if research-based classification or impairment-based treatment is more effective for treating patients with low back pain that has lasted less than 90 days in terms of improvements in pain and disability. The results of this study may help reduce the high financial cost associated with low back pain.

Interprofessional Rehabilitation for Adults With Chronic Non-specific Low Back Pain

The primary aim of the study is to analyse the long-term effectiveness of an interprofessional and interdisciplinary rehabilitation program named "PASTOR", with a biopsychosocial approach for participants with chronic non-specific low back pain (CLBP) compared to the standard inpatient multidisciplinary orthopaedic rehabilitation (MOR) in Germany. The investigators hypothesize that in adults with CLBP the rehabilitation program PASTOR would result in a significantly higher increase in functional ability 12 months after completion of the program in comparison to the standard inpatient MOR. The investigators further hypothesize that PASTOR would lead to significantly larger improvements regarding pain-related cognitions, pain coping strategies, physical activity, health-related quality of life, and back pain episodes compared to the standard inpatient MOR.

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common medical problems encountered in daily life; it is related to disability and work absence and accounts for high economical costs in Western societies. Low-back pain is a diverse group of mixed pain syndromes (neuropathic and nociceptive) with different molecular pathologies at different structural levels displaying similar clinical manifestations. Currently, there are limited biomarkers (mostly imaging) or clinical findings that can be used objectively to help the physician in precise anatomic diagnosis leading to the safest and most cost-effective treatment for the patient (reduction of direct and indirect costs and improvement of treatment efficacy). The main aim of this trial is to identify all "omics biomarkers" associated with susceptibility to chronic/persistent LBP and its different pathophysiology.
