Filter by:Objectives*: Primary Objective: Aim 1: Examine the acceptability of tailored behavioral weight loss program and a standard program in men working in blue-collar occupations. Aim 2: Compare recruitment approaches that vary on trust-based messaging to recruit men with overweight/obesity who work in blue-collar occupations. Secondary Objectives: Determine the feasibility of retaining participants to a randomized trial over six months.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the combination of two dietary supplements: MUSCLE 5, which contains protein, creatine and vitamin D and TRIM 7, which contains beet extract, caffeine, coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, forskolin extract, green coffee bean extract, green tea and vitamin E, plus exercise can induce greater 'high-quality' weight loss than exercise alone in overweight and obese men and women. First, the investigators will examine whether the addition of these two supplements to a mixed exercise regime (e.g., aerobic and resistance training) induces greater improvements in typical training adaptations (aerobic capacity, upper & lower body muscle strength, lean mass, ASM, fat mass, % body fat, and lean mass/fat mass). Secondly, the investigators will assess improvements in pro- and anti-inflammatory factors, insulin sensitivity, and blood lipids. Third, the investigators will determine effects on perceived stress, sleep quality, hair & nail growth, and health-related quality of life. Overweight men and women will be randomized to either exercise alone or exercise plus supplement for 12 weeks. Training will include mixed exercise (aerobic and resistance) three days per week and supplements will be taken on a daily basis. Before and after the 12-week training period the investigators will assess A) Body weight, BMI, DXA outcomes (total lean mass, total body fat, % body fat, ASM, and lean mass/fat mass), waist circumference, VO2max, and upper/lower body maximal strength, B) Circulatory inflammatory factors, antioxidants, blood lipids, and oral glucose tolerance/insulin sensitivity (OGTT), C) Perceived stress, sleep quality, hair & nail growth, and health-related quality of life and D) Overall Health Index. Benefits of the study to participants may include weight loss and improved health (irrespective of weight loss). Benefits of the study to the scientific community include improved understanding of how high-quality protein- and antioxidant-containing supplements, combined with mixed exercise, affect weight loss and overall health in men and women. Thus, the investigators will be comparing men and women to determine if the response to supplementation and exercise is similar or different between the sexes.
More and more normal weight people are dieting in the general population. The NUTRILEX study aims to better understand the physiological adaptations in response to weight loss in healthy normal weight individuals. After an inclusion visit to verify the eligibility criteria of the subjects, they will complete a "T0" control session. The subjects will then have to complete two phases. The first transversal phase consists of 4 randomized sessions with lunch ad libitum after a physical exercise: i) a control session (no exercise, CON); ii) an exercise session at initial body weight (BWT0); iii) an exercise session with a simulated weight loss of 3% performed on an anti-gravity treadmill (BW-3%) and; iv) an exercise session with a simulated weight loss of 6% performed on an anti-gravity treadmill (BW-6%). During the second longitudinal phase, the participants will perform a dietary rebalancing and a slight caloric restriction (dietary intervention) in order to induce a weight loss of 6% of their initial body weight. Subjects will then perform an exercise session after losing 3% (T1) and then 6% (T2) of their initial body weight.
The purpose of this study is to better understand the use of Healthdot devices on bariatric patients in the USA. Healthdot is a wearable monitoring device that can collect data on heart rate, respiration rate, posture, and activity. This device can be worn at the hospital and at home. The Healthdot will be able to send data and have good connectivity in a place where there is network coverage(4G/5G).
Obesity is considered the epidemic of the 21st century. Obesity is a multifactorial disease and the most important risk factors are poor diet and sedentary lifestyle. An excessive body weight contributes to increase the risk of suffering from other diseases and mortality rates. Therefore, the prevention and control of excessive body weight as well as its comorbidities are essential. In this sense, the principal strategy to treat obesity is to improve dietary habits and increase physical activity. However, the rate of obesity continues rising. In order to deal with this problem, new strategies to combat obesity are being investigated, such as the investigation of new bioactive compounds with satiating capacity that can be included in healthy dietary patterns to improve adherence to dietary treatments. Considering this background, the main objective of this research is to assess the effect of daily consumption of protein rich bars accompanied by healthy dietary recommendations on weight loss of overweight/obese adult men and women.
Bariatric surgery (BS) is currently the most effective treatment in severe obesity. However, a considerable percentage of patients undergoing BS fail to lose sufficient weight or regain weight after initial weight loss during long-term follow-up, which may be attributed to personality traits and pathological eating behaviour. Previous positron emission tomography (PET) studies have shown reduced dopamine D2 receptor availability in obese patients and upregulation of this availability following successful BS in the brain's reward system. Dopamine D2 receptor availability in patients with unsuccessful BS has not been investigated to date.
The purpose of this study is to test the OA Clinic-Community CARE Model (OA CARE) which will address all recommended components of knee/hip (osteoarthritis) OA care, include interventions for both patients and primary care providers (PCPs), and utilize a tailored approach that efficiently matches treatments with patients' needs. The patient component of OA CARE will include evidence-based weight management and exercise programs for all participants (delivered through the YMCA), as well as tailored referrals to physical therapy, additional weight management or nutrition services, sleep-related services and psychological services. The PCP component of OA CARE will include a video-based summary of current OA treatment guidelines (with emphasis on practical application), collaboration on patients' referrals to specific services described above, and progress reports on enrolled patients.
This pilot randomized controlled trial will compare a remotely delivered behavioral weight loss program with a balanced calorie deficit diet (the current gold-standard) to a behavioral weight loss program with an ad libitum whole food plant-based diet (WFPBD) amongst adults with overweight/obesity (N = 52). The 6-month intervention will consist of 3 months of moderate-intensity intervention (weekly online modules and brief coaching calls), then a low-intensity period (3 calls over 3-months). Assessments will occur at baseline, 6-weeks, 12-weeks, and post-treatment (6-months). Acceptability, dietary adherence, weight, quality of life, depressive symptoms, and subjective appetite will be assessed.
Meditation interventions, including mindfulness-based approaches, can be effective in reducing psychological stress . Mindfulness meditation, which cultivates awareness of present-moment experience with a nonjudging attitude, is theorized to promote adaptive self-regulation,which is thought to be key to maintaining long-term eating habits and appetite regulation.In the light of this information, in this study, it is aimed to observe the effect of mindfulness approach on body weight and appetite control.
Emerging evidence suggests that dietary and metabolic interventions could potentially target prevention and supportive therapies as well as treatments that may slow the clinical deterioration of neurodegenerative disorders. Though certain dietary patterns can impair specific cognitive domains, e.g., declines in reasoning and global cognition, there is still no consensus on the optimal diet to maintain brain health. Studies have also shown an association between the gut microbiome and neurocognition, as the microbiota can affect neuronal function through neurotransmitters and neuroactive microbial metabolites. Furthermore, studies indicate that diet may strongly influence the gut microbiota. However, the mechanisms for these complex relationships are still poorly understood. Bariatric procedures [i.e., weight loss surgeries] create a unique environment, in which a fast change in gut microbiota composition and dietary patterns occurs through surgery-induced intestinal and metabolic modifications, leading to changes in gut-brain communication. Interestingly, improvements in neurocognitive domains including memory and executive function have been reported post-bariatric surgery. However, there is large variability in these outcomes, indicating that the benefits are not universal. The goal of the current study is to explore the associations between dietary patterns and gut microbiota with cognition and brain structure, using bariatric surgery as an efficient naturalistic experimental design. This project will also explore potential mediators of diet-microbiome alterations as they relate to improvements in brain function and structure. A total of 120 adult patients (> 30y yrs.) scheduled to undergo a first bariatric surgery along with 60 age-, sex-, and BMI-matched waitlist control group will be recruited from the bariatric surgery clinic at the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal. These individuals will undergo assessments 3 months before surgery, as well as 6- and 12-months post-surgery, or an equivalent time for those on the waitlist. This study will also include 60 age-and sex-matched individuals who are not eligible for bariatric surgery as an additional healthy Canadian comparison group (only one assessment time point). Assessments taken during the data collection period will include: self-report information [e.g., sociodemographic and background information, health and diet behaviours]; information from medical records [e.g., medications usage, peri- and post-surgical complications, etc.]; physiological measures [i.e., blood, urine and fecal samples collection]; cognitive assessment [i.e., neuropsychological tests battery]; and brain imaging [i.e., structural MRI]. Collectively, this study is designed to provide critical information about potential individually targeted diet-based preventative strategies to reduce the development and progression of neurodegenerative disorders. Moreover, this project will explore potential mediators of diet-microbiome alterations as they relate to improvements in brain function and structure, and as such, it will provide essential information on key mechanisms, stimulating further research and the creation of parallel non-dietary therapeutic options.
