Short-term Perioperative Thromboprophylaxis After Major Abdominal Surgery

Major abdominal surgery for cancer is major risk factor for thromboembolism. Patients who undergo major abdominal surgery are prone to develop venous thromboembolism, both in the early postoperative period and after hospital discharger. There are strong recommendations in the international guidelines in favor to pharmacological thromboprophylaxis. Thus there is no consensus dor the duration of the prophylaxis. There are authors that suggest extended prophylaxis up to 4 week after surgery. On the other hand, there are prospective randomized trials that inpatient (short-term up to 7-10 days) prophylaxis is adequate.

Non-Interruptive Alerts for Improving Use of Clinical Decision Rules

This study is an extension of a planned quality improvement project that aims to promote standard of care by increasing the use of evidence-based clinical decision rules amongst emergency medicine providers in the University of Utah Emergency Department. Patient-specific information from the EHR will be used to recommend the use of relevant clinical decision rules to emergency medicine providers at the point-of-care. These recommendations will be in the form of non-interruptive alerts with one-click access to the suggested decision rules through the MDCalc Connect EHR add-on application. Specific aims of the study are to determine if 1) patient-specific non-interruptive alerts increase the use of clinical decision rules amongst emergency medicine providers and 2) an increase in the use of clinical decision rules affects provider ordering habits.

Resolution Enhancement by a Supplemental Obstruction Lessening Venoactive Drug for Eight Weeks in Deep Vein Thrombosis

The RESOLVE-DVT study is a randomized single-center pilot study to determine the effects of hydroxyethylrutoside (Venoruton) on aspects of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) resolution associated with post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). Based on these results, the investigators will estimate its potential as a preventive therapy for PTS. Eligible consenting patients who develop an acute, objectively confirmed DVT will be randomized and equally allocated to two trial arms, either the treatment group (Venoruton tablet 500 mg twice daily) or the control group (usual care). The pilot trial consists of 5 study contacts over 12 weeks at which outcome assessment is performed: inclusion, 1 week, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks. Treatment allocation is masked for outcome assessors, but not for patients.
