Filter by:Parental involvement, both quantitative and qualitative, is fundamental for a good psycho-emotional development of the child. The lack of parental involvement and especially paternal involvement significantly promotes the occurrence of behavioral disorders in children and later, in adolescence, the onset of depressive symptomatology. On the other hand, parental involvement has a protective role in the occurrence of behavioral disorders and decreases the risk of suicide attempts in adolescence. The authors of these cohort studies agree on the need for research on the identification of factors determining paternal involvement in order to organize specific prevention actions and targeted interventions to promote the involvement of fathers in psychiatric care of their adolescents. The prevention of adolescent suicide attempts appears to be a real public health issue in Reunion Island with a suicide rate among under-35s twice as high as in Reunion than in metropolitan France. This work is a continuation of the guidelines of good practice of the High Authority of Health (HAS) which insist on the importance of "supporting the parental function by health and public action".
This study will examine the feasibility and acceptability of a program designed to conduct safety planning with youth in the juvenile justice system who are at risk for a suicide attempt and/or self-injury and to increase the possibility of them receiving outpatient mental health treatment. After training staff in the intervention, the investigators will pilot test the safety planning intervention and gather information on how well it worked on reducing self-harm, getting families to follow up with referrals for mental health care, and how often they attend treatment.
The study evaluates the effect of Dialectic Behavior Therapy Skills System (DBT-SS) in individuals with Intelligence Quotient 65-85 and recurrent self-harm. The study is primarily descriptive with 6 cases followed by repeated measurements (weekly; time series analysis). Primary outcome measure is frequency and severity of self-harming behavior, reported weekly 4 weeks before the start of the intervention, throughout the intervention and 12 weeks after the intervention has stopped.
The primary goal of this study is to test the acceptability and feasibility of iASIST (integrated Alcohol and Suicide Intervention for Suicidal Teens), a novel adjunctive intervention for alcohol use and alcohol-related suicidal thoughts and behaviors for suicidal adolescent inpatients. The investigators will first conduct an open trial with 10 adolescents and their parents to test iASIST and make subsequent changes to the booster. Next, the investigators will conduct a randomized trial with 50 adolescents and their parents to test the feasibility and acceptability of iASIST as well as associations with alcohol- and suicide-related outcomes at 3 months post-discharge, relative to participants who receive an attention-matched comparison condition focused on the role of a healthy lifestyle in mental health that includes a post-discharge mHealth control targeting the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.
This study is looking at the helpfulness of a brief treatment targeting suicidality (Teachable Moment Brief Intervention [TMBI]) and experimental pain responses in an inpatient population as well as collecting comparison data from the community.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24 (WHO, 2014). After a first suicide attempt, the 18 to 25 years old would be very likely to repeat the act: 25 to 31% would make a new attempt in the following year (Christiansen et al, 2007). Nevertheless the literature on this subject is not detailed. In this project, we hypothesize that young adults aged 18 to 25 who have made their first suicide attempt will repeat their act more frequently than younger or older populations. In addition, these young people would have identifiable risk factors (sociodemographic, clinical and biological) that differ from young people who do not enter this phenomenon. Our main objective is to measure the rate of suicidal reiteration in a population of young adults aged 18 to 25 years. Our secondary objectives are to identify sociodemographic, clinical and biological characteristics of a population of suicidal re attempt young people, to highlight potential risk factors
The overall objective is to determine the acceptability and feasibility of the Teachable Moment Brief Intervention (TMBI) + follow-up consultation for Veterans treated on an inpatient psychiatry unit following a suicide attempt. The study will also determine whether there is a signal of effectiveness supporting the TMBI in improving the recovery trajectory of Veterans following discharge to the community.
This study evaluates whether a Family-centered suicide prevention strategy, when added to usual care (F-SPS + UC), is more effective than enhanced usual care (EUC) in reducing suicide-related behaviors in 128 youth at high-risk of suicide. Half of the participants will be randomized to receive F-SPS + UC and half will receive EUC.
This goal of this research is to examine the efficacy and feasibility of starting a phone call follow-up program for individuals discharged to the community after presenting to the Crisis Response Centre (CRC), a standalone mental health facility in Winnipeg, with suicidal ideation or behaviours. Currently there is no worldwide gold standard for how best to follow-up with individuals following presentations to health services with suicidal ideation or behaviours, despite the period immediately after discharge from mental health services being identified as a period of increased risk for death by suicide (Chung et al., 2017; Steeg et al., 2012). This risk is higher still for individuals who specifically had suicidal ideation or behaviours as a component of their reason for presenting to mental health services (Chung et al., 2017). One strategy that has been employed to mitigate this risk is brief contact interventions (BCI), which involves following up with people through text, phone calls, or written messages. Research has shown that this type of follow-up is well-received by individuals and although some studies have found this strategy reduces the rates of suicidal behaviours during this high-risk period, the overall literature shows mixed results (Miller et al., 2017; Exbrayat et al., 2017; Cebria et al., 2016; Milner et al., 2015; Morthorst et al., 2012; Fleischmann et al., 2008; Cedereke et al., 2002). Because the research on phone call follow up programs has been mixed, we will be conducting a brief trial to study the efficacy and feasibility of a phone call follow-up system in Winnipeg to inform whether or not this type of program would be of benefit to the community. In order to best study this, we will be conducting a randomized control trial for individuals who are discharged to the community after presenting to the CRC with a recent history of suicidal thoughts or behaviours. Participants will be randomized into either an intervention group or a control group. All participants will receive at least one and no more than five phone calls during the five-week period immediately following discharge from the CRC, and the content and timing of these phone calls will be different depending on which group a participant is randomized to. We will rely on both self-reported data, which will be collected in a formalized fashion, and data in the electronic medical records of participants to analyze this intervention. Our hypothesis is that the specific protocol we have designed to follow up with the intervention group will result in decreased suicidal thoughts and behaviours in the period immediately following discharge.
Suicide is a major public health problem. Although inpatient treatment provides immediate stabilization and crisis management, the risk of suicide post-discharge is substantial. Approximately one third of all suicides by individuals with mental disorders occur in the 90 days following hospitalization. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to reduce both suicidal ideation and behavior in outpatients. However, to date, the efficacy of inpatient CBT for suicide prevention is not clear. This study aims to 1) develop and implement a brief CBT treatment for suicide prevention for inpatients, 2) conduct a brief feasibility test and collect initial pilot data on efficacy, and 3) collect preliminary data on the effects of CBT on implicit cognitive suicide associations. In Phase 1, the investigators will work with an expert in CBT for suicide prevention to modify his treatment protocol for use with inpatients, and meet with this expert for a 2-day protocol training. In Phase 2, the investigators will conduct an initial feasibility trial with 5-10 inpatients recruited from the Institute of Living inpatient units. Participants will be recruited within 24 hrs of admission or later and will provide written informed consent prior to any study procedures. Enrolled participants will undergo a clinical assessment by an independent evaluator (IE) that will include diagnostic/symptom assessments, assessment of suicide risk using the Columbia-Suicide Rating Scale, and an implicit association test (IAT). Participants will receive up to 10 daily sessions of CBT (depending on length of stay), lasting 1 hour, following the manualized protocol developed in Phase 1. Participants will then meet with the IE again for reassessment after the 10th session or within 24 hr prior to discharge, whichever comes first. After discharge, participants will have a telephone interview at 1 month, 2 month, and 3 month follow-up. The IE will administer the C-SSRS during these calls. The proposed study will yield feasibility and initial efficacy data that will be used to inform a grant proposal to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. That proposal will fund a randomized controlled trial of CBT vs. treatment as usual. Concurrently, the investigators will develop an in-house program to train other staff in the protocol, and will submit a second grant to investigate the efficacy of the training program as well as the efficacy of CBT by those clinicians.
