Oral health is crucial for palliative patients' quality of life. The evidence on effective interventions and measures of oral mucositis in palliative care is sparse. This is a single-center, prospective, uncontrolled open label Phase 2 non-profit study, aimed at evaluating a propolis-based product (FARINGEL PLUS) added to basic oral hygiene safety, acceptability and activity in preventing and treating oral mucositis in patients in palliative care. A two-step design was adopted according to Simon's Optimum approach, with an overall sample of 77 evaluable cases (step1_26 cases; step2_51 cases).

Randomized Trial of Curcumin to Reduce Mucositis in Autologous Transplant Setting

Mucositis is a very common complication in bone marrow transplant setting. It is a result of injury to the gut caused by high dose chemotherapy. Currently there are no universal protocols that have been accepted as a standard to prevent and treat mucositis in the transplant setting. Post transplant upto 80% of patients suffer from a severe mucositis. Proinflammatory cytokines play a major role in the development of mucositis. Interventions that decrease the levels of these cytokines may be beneficial in preventing mucositis. This study is aimed at evaluating the role of curcumin in reducing cytokine levels and the incidence and duration of mucositis in patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation.

Camel Whey Protein Gel for the Treatment of Aphthous Ulcer

Higher prevalence of recurrent aphthous ulcer in young adults and the severity decreased with increasing age. The etiology of aphthous ulcer remains unclear. Other possible factors include trauma, drug use, deficiency in vitamin B12, folic acid, iron, stress, hormonal changes and metabolic diseases. Many topical agents such as local and systemic an- tibiotics, local antiseptics, topical NSAIDs, and topical corticosteroids are generally prescribed for symptomatic relief. Several approved drug for- mulations such as pills, mouthwash, sprays and paste such as vitamin B12, chlorhexidine mouthwash, steroid lozenges and local anesthetics are primarily suggested for the treatment of aphthous ulcer. Camel whey protein gel was fabricated to get benefits of its antiinflammatory, immunomodulator, Antibacterial and antioxidant effects.

Hyaluronic Acid in Counteracting Aphthous Stomatitis

Oral mucosal ulcers can determine a real worsening of the quality of life. Conventional therapy usually lasts not less than 2-3 weeks, and carries a high risk of serious side effects; furthermore, ulcers often recur. The use of hyaluronic acid applied as an adhesive gel over the lesions seems to have potential in terms of efficacy and the avoidance of side effects. Of course, hyaluronic acid-based formulations show different effects and tolerability. In this retrospective observational study, the results obtained using a hyaluronic-acid based medical device applied for 14 days to counteract ulcers in adults will be reported.

The Effectiveness of a Thyme and Honey Spray for Oral Toxicities

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of thymus honey on radiation induced-oral mucositis and xerostomia. Background: Oral mucositis and xerostomia are two of the most severe side effects that head and neck cancer patients confront during and after the completion of radiotherapy. Although several medications are used for their treatment, these fail to provide a fully effective and comprehensive management. Honey and thyme have been studied for the management of various treatment-related side effects. Design: Α double blinded randomised controlled trial will be used for this study. Methods: 200 head and neck cancer patients who receive radiotherapy will be included in this study. Patients will be randomised and divided into two equal groups of 100 participants; the intervention group (oral spray with thyme and honey + standard care) and the control group ( placebo spray + standard care). Assessments with xerostomia and oral mucositis scales additionally to 4 self-administered questionnaires will occur in both groups at baseline and then weekly and 6 months following completion of treatment. The duration of the study will be 3 years from the day of approval of this research protocol.

Microbiota and Symptom Distress in Head and Neck Cancer Patients Receiving Radiotherapy

The investigators plan to conduct a 3-year pioneering care research project for mucositis in cancer patients. These include: (1) an analysis of the incidence and severity of mucositis, severity, treatment methods, and treatment costs; (2) an RCT comparing the effectiveness of honey, Taiwan green propolis, and usual care in mucositis of cancer patients; (3) monitoring of related symptom changes using a smart bracelet device; (4) a measurement of IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF, Microbiota in saliva, Microbiota in stool and (4) modeling of the trend of mucositis for alertness and search of essential parameters of the complications.

Curcumin; Rose Bengal; Denture Stomatitis

Cigarette smoking in conjugation with bad oral hygiene is considered a typical predisposing factor for many oral diseases including denture stomatitis. This study investigated the effect of Rose Bengal (RB)-and Curcumin (CUR)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) in comparison with nystatin therapy in the intervention of denture stomatitis in cigarette smokers. Overall, 45 habitual cigarette smokers aged ~58 years having denture stomatitis were categorized into three groups: Group-I - RB-mediated PDT, Group-II - CUR-mediated PDT, and Group-III - Nystatin therapy. The primary outcome of the interest was: counts of Candida colony from denture surface and palatal mucosa, calculated as CFU/mL, whereas the prevalence of Candida species determined in 3 research groups comprised the secondary outcome. Oral swab specimens were gathered from the denture surfaces and palatal mucosa. All clinical assessments were performed at baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks. C. albicans was the most prevalent yeast identified on both denture surfaces and palatal mucosa, followed by C. tropicalis and C. glabrata. A considerable decrease in the CFU/mL scores were observed in Group-I and Group-II at the end of the interventions and on the 12-week follow-up (p<0.05). Group-I, II, and III demonstrated clinical efficacy rates of 53%, 51%, and 49%, respectively. CUR-and RB-mediated PDT was found to be as effective as topical Nystatin therapy for the intervention of denture stomatitis among cigarette smokers.

Association of Periodontal Inflammation on Immune Response in Wound Healing

Subjects who are in need of extraction of a posterior tooth will be recruited for this study. Prior to extraction, periodontal clinical markers of inflammation, body-mass index and dental radiographs will be measured/taken. The posterior tooth will be atraumatically extracted and a small soft tissue biopsy of the extraction site will be taken. At the two week follow-up, sutures will be removed and another small biopsy of soft tissue will be taken. Subjects will be seen again at 3 months for a final collection of clinical data and radiographs.
