Filter by:The investigators will conduct a hybrid efficacy-effectiveness trial intended to address these gaps by testing the efficacy-effectiveness of two multi-family group interventions, and on 250 English-speaking adults: Savvy Caregiver Express™ (3-session, newly piloted in Los Angeles County for feasibility) and Savvy Caregiver Program (original 6-session evidenced-based intervention), across post-intervention, 3- and 6-months.
The quality of intensive care unit (ICU)-based palliative care is highly variable, particularly for the 2 million older adults admitted annually to ICUs. To address these care delivery barriers among older ICU patients, a mobile app platform called PCplanner (Palliative Care planner) was developed. PCplanner automates the identification of high-risk patients (e.g., dementia, declining health status, poor functioning) by directly capturing data from electronic health record (EHR) systems, cultivates family engagement with supportive information and a digital system for self-report of actual needs, and facilitates the delivery of care to those with a high burden of need by coordinating collaboration between ICU teams and palliative care specialists. 150 patients, 150 family caregivers, and 75 physicians from academic and community settings will be enrolled in a RCT designed to test the efficacy of PCplanner-augmented collaborative palliative care vs usual care. Family caregiver and clinician experiences will be explored using mixed methods to understand intervention mechanisms as well as implementation barriers within diverse case contexts. The key hypothesis is that compared to usual care, PCplanner will reduce family caregivers' unmet needs and psychological distress, increase the frequency of goal concordant treatment among older adult patients, and reduce hospital length of stay.
The overarching goal of primary care is to offer all patients individualized and context-sensitive healthcare with high access and continuity. One of the reasons primary care struggles with this goal is that many patients suffer from mental health problems, while there is a lack of psychosocial resources as well as clear pathways for these patients. Primary care behavioural health (PCBH, in Swedish IBH) is an innovative way of organizing primary care, where psychosocial resources have more and shorter visits, strive for same-day access, and have an active consulting role in the primary care team. To help patients with achieving relevant behavior changes, so called Brief Interventions are used. However, these interventions have not been systematically evaluated in the same way that CBT has, and there is a risk that patients that would have benefitted from structured CBT are undertreated. This study is a pilot study preparing for a large multicenter study that will be conducted starting in late 2020. The investigators want to find out if an addition of an extended evaluation and possibility of treatment with guided CBT self-help can increase the treatment effects of PCBH on patient functioning and symptoms, compared to standard PCBH with a contextual assessment and brief interventions. In the process, the investigators are also conducting one of the first RCT on brief interventions. As this is a pilot study, the feasibility of implementing the study protocol in regular healthcare is also tested in order to collect high-quality data while creating minimal disturbance in the centers' ordinary routines. PCBH has the potential to increase the quality of care for patients with mental health problems. This study is the first to step towards answering the question if the effects of brief intervention are large enough to merit large-scale implementation, and if an add-on of other brief and easily implemented treatments can increase them.
The COPE Trial is a randomized controlled trial that will provide currently isolated yet generally physically healthy 18-64 year old adults who are pre-retirement with the opportunity to receive a free 3-month subscription to either a yoga or moderate-to-high intensity aerobic exercise app or be randomized to a waitlist control group. Study outcomes include measures of psychological wellbeing and physical health.
The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Granada (UGR) has been leading the lists of the best faculties in this area in Spain and abroad for years. This has largely defined the profile of its students as high performing and, therefore, more prone to display maladaptive perfectionism which can lead to psychological distress (Rice et al 2006). However psychological distress is not something that only affects high profile students. Several studies report overall greater stress levels among undergraduate students when compared to general population levels (Ramasubramanian 2017). In fact, it is estimated that nearly 40 percent of university students experience mild to severe depressive symptoms with over 50 percent of students predicted to experience some level of depressive symptomatology during their college years (Pogrebtsova et al 2018: 46). Coping with cognitive and emotional challenges is therefore a desirable aim for every student on a daily bases. It is within this framework that CRAFTftiugr was born, a teaching innovation project, which is the result of the interaction among experts in mindfulness, lecturers and researchers in Translation and Interpreting and Experimental Psychology, students, Administrative and Support Staff and social stakeholders in the context of Higher Education. The main objective of the study is to test whether participating in a course on mindfulness-based techniques can improve students' cognitive, emotional and personal traits as well as academic performance. Together with this main purpose, the present study also aims to compare the effects of two mindfulness based programs, MBSR and CRAFT, on the students' ability to improve specific aspects of cognition, emotional intelligence, creativity or academic performance among others. Both mindfulness-based programs involve training sustained attention and an accepting and open attitude though they differ in several aspects of their methods, intention and aims. Drawing conclusions from the outcomes, a curriculum applied to Translation and Interpreting Studies will be designed aimed at preventing the development of psychological stress, perfectionism and other anxiety disorders, maximizing comfort in the Higher Education context and, ultimately, improving academic achievement.
Brief summary: The objective of this study is to develop an internet-based cognitive behavioral intervention program (including an online platform and a smartphone application) for Chinese university students in Hong Kong, and examine its effectiveness in reducing psychological distress, anxiety/depression symptoms, and improving emotions and automatic thoughts. The 3-month maintenance effect will also be tested.
As part of the ROCO project, the University of Bern is investigating an online self-help program for people who are psychologically distressed due to the situation surrounding Covid-19. The ROCO program offers support in overcoming this psychological distress. ROCO stands for a 3-week online self-help program comprising 6 modules. The aim of the study is to investigate the efficacy of an online self-help intervention for people with psychological distress due to the situation surrounding Covid-19. All participants will be randomized to one of two groups: The first group receives direct access to the online self-help intervention and the second group is a waiting control group that receives access to the program 3 weeks later. In both conditions additional care or treatment is allowed. There are 4 assessments, which all take place online: baseline, post assessment (after 3 weeks) and two follow-up assessments (after 6 and 18 weeks). All participants from both groups are asked to fill out all assessments.
The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic is unprecedented in its scale of infection and the response required to decrease the mortality rates. Disturbingly, the European and United States experience demonstrates that health care systems in industrialized countries are at risk of becoming overwhelmed. Physicians are already at risk of burnout under normal working conditions, and in particular, when responding to crisis situations. During the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak, healthcare workers experienced high rates of psychological distress that lasted years. However, there may be protective factors that may decrease the rate or severity of psychological distress and burnout. This study seeks to investigate the rates of physician burnout assessed at multiple time points during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, this study seeks to determine the factors that may increase or decrease burnout and psychological distress in such a setting. This study will be a national longitudinal survey of physicians in Canada. It will include all physicians that currently hold a license to practice in Canada (whether in training or a full license). Consenting participants will complete an initial survey gathering information about their type of practice, health conditions, preparations the COVID-19 pandemic, burnout, and psychological distress. Every month, participants will be asked to complete a follow-up survey, describing their stressors, coping strategies, burnout, and psychological distress. The investigators will analyze and report the initial results to help provincial and national organizations support our physicians and mitigate burnout during this pandemic. The results of the follow up surveys will be analyzed and reported following the pandemic. These findings will help keep our physician workforce healthy under normal working conditions and during future crises.
This study investigates mental health mobile apps, to understand their efficacy in reducing mild levels of psychological distress amongst adolescents. All participants will be provided with an app which is already available in the public domain, and will be asked to use the app for guided self-help. Half of participants will receive a weekly telephone call, whilst the other half will not.
This multicenter randomized controlled study will appraise the effectiveness and cost-utility of an e-health ecosystem with integrated and stepped psychosocial services that will be compared with the usual psychosocial care. The study is developed in the acute survival phase among breast cancer survivors. The outcomes of both interventions will be compared in terms of the amount of waiting time to receive psychosocial care and changes in several psychosocial variables. Finally, a comparative economic analysis will be conducted in other relevant psychosocial and health parameters. The e-health platform is expected to outperform usual care in the aforementioned indicators, while reaching high acceptability and usability by survivors, and additionally reducing costs for health providers.
