Due its high incidence, mTBI and its consequences of PPCS are a major public health issue. There is no consensus regarding the treatment of PPCS in pediatrics. Relying on its results in adults, HBOT offers a promising new direction of treatment, which targets the basic pathological processes responsible for post-concussion symptoms. The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in pediatric TBI has never been evaluated. The aim of the current study is to evaluate in a prospective cross-over, randomized study, the effect of HBOT on children with PPCS due to mild TBI.

The Effectiveness of Biofeedback for Individuals With Long-term Post-concussive Symptoms

This 8-week intervention study will evaluate the efficacy of heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback and neurofeedback on reducing the number and severity of concussion symptoms.

to examine the relationship between repeated concussions and late decline of brain function. In addition, all participants agreeing to participate in the study will be asked to will their brains to The Krembil Neuroscience Centre Concussion Project at the Toronto Western Hospital with the consent and full knowledge of their families and doctors. However, it is possible to participate in the research without agreeing to a brain donation. The Project Team is specifically attempting a clinical-MRI-brain tissue research analysis to determine the exact mechanism of the damage to brain tissue following repeated concussions. This condition is known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and shows an abnormal protein in the brain called tau-protein.

Safety and Feasibility of Early Active Rehabilitation in Children After Concussion

It has been suggested that activity immediately following concussion is detrimental to recovery and may lead to long term impairments. The animal model has shown that exercise too soon can lead to neurometabolic energy imbalances within the brain. However, there is also evidence to suggest that prolonged inactivity has negative consequences that may contribute to prolongation of symptoms. Determining the ideal timeframe in which to initiate an active rehabilitation protocol for patients who are slow to recovery is an important factor in concussion management.

Investigating the Physiological, Cognitive, and Psychological Effects of a Cognitive-Based Intervention

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a brief mindfulness-based intervention for targeting chronic physiological underarousal and post-concussive symptoms following a mild head injury (MHI), as self-reported by undergraduate university students. For the purposes of this study, MHI is defined (and identified) through our demographic questionnaire as a traumatic-based injury to the head - "Have you ever hit your head with a force sufficient to alter your state of consciousness" (consistent with the Kay et al., 1993 criteria/definition; American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine - ACRM). The investigators exclude congenital or genetic injuries.

Pediatric Concussion Assessment of Rest and Exertion

The goal of this study is to investigate when is the best time to resume physical activity following a head injury. Two treatment plans will be studied; the first treatment plan consists of gradually reintroducing physical activity in the child's routine, starting 72 hours following the head injury. The second treatment plan involves physical and mental rest until the child as no more symptoms. Once symptom free, physical activity is gradually reintroduced in the child's routine.
