Targeting Inflammation With Salsalate in Type 1 Diabetes Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is the most common chronic complication of diabetes, affecting up to50% of individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1DM). Multiple pre-clinical and clinical studies demonstrate a pathogenic role for inflammation, especially cytokine production, in the disease course of DN and CAN. This suggests that agents with known anti-inflammatory properties, such as salicylates, may prevent the development of DN and the pain associated with DN. This study builds upon and expands on prior work done by the investigators with salsalate, a pro-drug form of salicylate, as an agent to address inflammatory pathways in people with T1DM.

Evaluating the Effects of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Taxane Induces Peripheral Neuropathy

Taxane Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (TIPN) is a major dose limiting side effect of taxane chemotherapies and it often reduces the success of the patient treatment. Treating TIPN is difficult and at this time conventional treatment is primarily limited to the global use of antidepressants and anticonvulsants. Acupuncture treatment has been used for symptom improvement in patients with peripheral neuropathy caused by HIV and diabetes mellitus; however, few studies have evaluated acupuncture as a viable treatment for taxane induced peripheral neuropathy. This study will enroll female breast cancer survivors at the Greenville Health System Cancer Institute Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship to assess whether acupuncture holds any therapeutic benefit for TIPN and how it influences the mechanisms underlying resolution of TIPN. This would provide critical validation of acupuncture and increase potential for other forms of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy.

MC5-A Scrambler Therapy or TENS Therapy in Treating Patients With Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

This randomized clinical trial studies how well MC5-A scrambler therapy or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy work in treating patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (a nerve problem that causes pain, numbness, tingling, swelling, or muscle weakness in different parts of the body). MC5-A scrambler therapy is a type of treatment for nerve pain that uses electrodes placed on the skin, where electricity is carried from the electrodes through the skin and blocks the pain. TENS is a procedure in which mild electric currents are applied to some areas of the skin. It is not yet known whether TENS therapy is more effective than MC5-A scrambler therapy in treating chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel, may cause damage to nerves that result in aches, pains, and tingling or numbness of fingers and toes. Minocycline hydrochloride may help lessen nerve damage from paclitaxel and improve the quality of life in breast cancer patients.
