Filter by:RYSE is a Family-based Approach for Healthy Lifestyles that is a program for families with children between the ages of 5-12 years old to help them make healthy lifestyle changes to reach a healthier weight. The research program does this with children and their families through guidance about healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior change. The program focuses on helping participating families set up healthy support systems at home, at school and in social settings.
This study will evaluate the effectiveness of a 2-month time-restricted feeding (TRF) intervention in children and adolescents with obesity. The investigators will determine whether the potential beneficial effects of the intervention in this population are maintained over time. Furthermore, potential mechanisms mediating TRF effects will be explored, specifically focusing on the potential role of the gut microbiome and the circadian rhythm.
Maternal stress is associated with children's risk for obesity controlling for socioeconomic status. The association between maternal stress and child obesity is particularly strong in Latinx families, whose children also have the highest rates of obesity in the United States. A mindful parenting program might reduce Latina mothers' psychological stress and lead to improved parenting practices and ability to create a healthier environment. The primary objective of the proposed research is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally-relevant intervention that integrates mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindful parenting in Latina mothers. The investigators will conduct a randomized clinical trial comparing the Calma, Conversa, y Cría (CCC) intervention to an active control condition in 50 Latina mothers of elementary-school age children. Participant satisfaction rates and qualitative interviews will provide evidence of the program's acceptability. Feasibility will be determined by examining recruitment rates, retention rates, and treatment fidelity. Completion of this project will inform the development of a full-scale efficacy trial.
The prevalence of obesity is one of the main public health problems worldwide, reaching 18% among young people between 5 and 19 years of age in 2016. One possibility of effective treatment can be the Mediterranean diet (MD). Therefore, it is proposed to carry out a nutritional intervention based on this diet to more effectively reduce obesity in adolescents. The main purpose of this multicentre study is to assess whether an energy-restricted Mediterranean-style diet (MD) intervention including healthy products from the Mediterranean basin (mixed nuts, pomegranate and hummus) and sourdough bread is more effective against obesity and associated CVD risk factors than a conventional low-fat diet carrying out a multicentre nutritional and clinical intervention study specifically targeting obese/overweight adolescents (13-17y) from different Mediterranean countries; all combined with an educational web-application designed to encourage healthy behaviours. It is a multicenter, randomized, controlled intervention study conducted with adolescents with obesity/overweight ≥90 percentile who do not suffer from any chronic disease. 240 subjects will be recruited from three Mediterranean countries: Italy (Parma), Portugal (Coimbra) and Spain (Reus), specifically 80 participants per country, 40 adolescents as an intervention group and 40 as a control group, in Reus. The intervention study is scheduled to begin in January 2021. The intervention group will receive a diet based on the characteristics of MD, and will be reinforced with satisfying and healthy Mediterranean foods such as sourdough bread (2 servings of 50-60g / day), squeezed pomegranate (4 servings of 200ml / week), hummus/chickpeas (2 portions of chickpeas of 150-200g / week, one in hummus format) and mixed nuts (4 servings of 30g / week); and the control group will receive a recommended diet based on the consumption of low-fat foods. A caloric restriction of 20% of the total energy requirements will be applied to both groups in adolescents with BMI ≥95 percentile (obesity) and a caloric restriction <20% of the total energy requirements will be applied in adolescents with BMI ≥90 to <95th percentile according to overweight (gender/age / physical activity). The diet will be applied for 4 months in both groups. Adolescents from both groups will be given a motivational interview and will be provided with an educational website that will be used during the intervention, through which they will learn.
The Southampton Women's Survey was established to assess the influence of factors operating before conception and during pregnancy on the health and development of the offspring. 12,583 non-pregnant young women were recruited, and 3,158 were followed through pregnancy, with their offspring followed-up at 6 months and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6-7, 8-9 and 12-13 years. The 17-19 year follow-up has been piloted and is about to start.
This proposal aims to test the initial feasibility and efficacy of a 10-week multidisciplinary pediatric weight management program among low-income Latino children, aged 5 to 11 years, from the Woodbridge, VA area. The following specific aims will be tested:
One in five children in the United States have obesity, and under-served populations are differentially impacted by both obesity and its related health consequences. Thus, community-based programs that improve the dissemination of effective obesity treatments are needed within low income settings. The current study aims to test the effectiveness of an evidence-based, community centered program, JOIN for ME, in two types of community settings: housing authorities and patient-centered medical homes. Children between the ages of 6-12 years old and who meet study eligibility criteria will be enrolled in the study and participate in the JOIN for ME weight control intervention. Participants will be assigned to active or delayed treatment conditions (4-month delay) but all participants will receive the JOIN for ME program. The program will be delivered in English or Spanish. Primary outcomes include change in child and parent weight status and health-related quality of life.
Today's children are increasingly facing metabolic-related health issues, among which the worldwide prevalence of overweight and obesity is rising at an alarming pace. Childhood obesity is associated with the early onset of chronic diseases including an emergence of prediabetes and diabetes mellitus type 2. The decline of insulin sensitivity already years before puberty, exposes children to long- term complications prior the appearance of clinical symptoms and time of diagnosis. The shortened life expectancy and large economic burden imposed underlines the need for the identification of metabotypes at risk at an early stage. One's genetics, microbial gut composition and every aspect of the environment in which children are raised have been implicated in diet-related obesity rendering metabolomics a very powerful tool towards precision medicine. Yet, the excellence of stool in reflecting the intertwining thereof is completely unexplored for pediatric purposes, whereas blood sampling causing pain and stress for child and parent only captures a narrow fraction of the metabolome. As such, rectal sampling using a customised medical swab for optimal gut metabolome coverage is envisioned. Ambient laser desorption ionisation will be hyphenated to high-resolution mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to provide a framework for elucidating predictive and/or prognostic biomarkers for ever-increasing pediatric metabolic diseases such as obesity and (pre)diabetes.
The main purpose of the present study is to perform a 10 weeks dietary intervention study with a follow-up for 52 weeks in children from 7-14 years of age with overweight or obesity. In a caloric restricted and increased physical activity setting the control group will consume a low-moderate protein (15E%/day) diet whereas the intervention group will consume a higher protein (25E%/day) diet. Furthermore, the investigators want to investigate the effect of frequent follow-up after intervention. Compared to the low-moderate protein diet, the investigators hypothesis that a diet with higher consumption of protein-containing foods will more effectively induce weight loss (a reduction in BMI-SDS) or weight maintenance in children with overweight or obesity, and improve risk factors for type 2 diabetes and Quality of Life.
Childhood obesity and related long-term effects are serious public health problems, but not all children with obesity do well in treatment. This study will test a new combination of family-based behavioral treatment (FBT) with a drug intervention using a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) exenatide once weekly extended-release (ExQW, Bydureon®) in order to improve obesity intervention outcomes in 10-12-year-old children.
