Filter by:This Phase 3 study will evaluate APP13007 in comparison to the matching vehicle placebo in a randomized, parallel-group, double-masked fashion. The subjects will have undergone routine cataract surgery on Day 0 of the study and will be assessed the next day (Post-operative Day 1; POD1) after uncomplicated surgery for eligibility for randomization to study treatment.
Aim of this study: is to evaluate the influence of stress level on the response of non surgical periodontal therapy in patients affected by severe periodontitis divided into "Medium/High stress level" or "Low stress level" based on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The defined primary outcome referring to the clinical response of the patients is the bleeding index, Full-Mouth Bleeding Score (FMBS), as a clinical sign of inflammation. Materials and Methods: Monocentric prospective triple blinded study. A single evaluator conducting all the psychologic tests, a single operator blinded to the results of the psychologic tests doing all the clinical measurements, and the patients will be initially blinded to the category of stress that they'll belong to. The minimum number of patients to enrol will be 89 based on a sample calculation. Inclusion Criteria: Patients must meet all of the following inclusion criteria to be eligible for enrollment into the study: Age from 20 to 80 years Diagnosis of Periodontitis stage III/IV according to the new classification (2018); Presence of at least 14 teeth, with a minimum of 10 sites with PD at least > 5 mm and radiographic evidence of alveolar bone loss. Written informed consent Exclusion Criteria. The presence of any of the following will exclude a subject from study enrollment: Smokers > 10 cig/die Patients with orthodontic appliances; Pregnant or lactating women; Individuals who have received periodontal treatment in the 6 months prior to recruitment; Patients with systemic diseases that could interfere the clinical response to periodontal treatment (i.e. diabetes); Subjects under treatment with antibiotics, steroidal and/or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication 3 weeks prior to the visit and patients treated with antiepileptic drugs Operative procedure: Clinical parameters and psychologic test will be done at the baseline. All the patients will be treated by means of non surgical periodontal therapy on a quadrant protocol including oral hygiene instructions and motivations and subgingival instrumentation in four successive visits. 6 weeks after the last visit, the clinical parameters will be registered again. Clinical Parameters: Periodontal condition of each patient will be evaluated through the collection of the following parameters: - Full-Mouth Bleeding score (FMBS): presence/absence of bleeding on probing using a periodontal probe on each surface of the tooth (six sites per tooth), calculated in percentage for all the examined teeth. - Full-Mouth Plaque Score (FMPS): presence/absence of plaque using a periodontal probe on each surface of the tooth (six sites per tooth), calculated in percentage for all the examined teeth. - Probing Depth (PD): measured for each surface of the tooth (six sites per tooth) using a periodontal probe, measured as the distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the depth of the pocket. - Gingival recession (Rec): measured for each surface of the tooth (six sites per tooth) using a periodontal probe, measured as the distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the free gingival margin. - Clinical attachment level (CAL): The sum of PD and Rec. Psychologic Test: The Stress condition of each patient will be assessed by a Psychologist using: PSS is a 10-items self-report questionnaire that measure the degree to which situations in one's life are appraised as stressful. The PSS is scored on a 5-point scale (never, almost never, sometimes, fairly often and very often). PSS norms are available from a sample of the USA collected by Cohen & Williamson (1988). The mean level for men was 12.1 (S.D. 5.9) and for women 13.7 (S.D. 6.6).
Naval Special Warfare (NSW) operators are exposed to a variety of extreme environmental conditions and intense physical demands. In addition to breathing high pressure gases at depth, prolonged cold water immersion and inadequate recovery from sustained physical exertion negatively impact individual and team performance. Biotechnologies that could mitigate the effects of cold as well as support physical recovery represent a significant unmet need for the NSW operational community. Oxytocin (OT) has a wide range of actions both locally in the brain and peripherally in the body including skeletal muscle. These peripheral effects can be mediated by classic ligand-receptor activation given the abundant expression of the oxytocin receptor in peripheral tissues, along with local expression of OT in peripheral tissues where it is likely to act in an autocrine manner. Exogenous OT via intranasal administration is FDA Investigational New Drug (IND)-approved and has been demonstrated as an easy and safe method to increase circulating OT concentrations that may augment actions on peripheral tissues. Due to the pleiotropic effects of OT on whole body metabolism, thermogenesis, stress responses, pain, mood, inflammation, appetite, glycemic control, skeletal homeostasis, and skeletal muscle repair and regeneration, there is increasing interest in the administration of exogenous OT for benefits to human health, performance and resilience. However, the biological mechanisms by which OT exerts tissue-specific effects (e.g., skeletal muscle) remain poorly understood, particularly in humans. This project is designed to significantly advance this understanding while testing the central hypothesis that intranasally administered OT attenuates systemic and skeletal muscle oxidative stress and inflammation induced by the combined stressor of resistance swim exercise and hyperoxia.
Strokes management, secondary to proximal arterial occlusion, by endovascular thrombectomy (TM) is now well established. The immuno-inflammatory events of reperfusion after TM are discussed. Systemic inflammation is a major factor suggested to explain the limited recovery of the ischemic parenchyma. Understanding these phenomena is necessary before developing an immunomodulatory strategy.
Background: Time-restricted feeding (TRF) means that a person eats only during certain hours of the day. In other studies, researchers have found that fasting can improve immune system function in healthy people. They want to see if TRF has the same effect on people with psoriasis. Objective: To test whether TRF can change metabolism and decrease some markers of inflammation in the blood of people with mild to moderate psoriasis. Eligibility: Males ages 18 to 80 with mild to moderate active psoriasis, and healthy volunteers Design: Participants will be screened with a medical history and medicine review. They will have a physical exam and blood tests. Their skin will be examined. They will have a nutritional evaluation. Their resting energy expenditure will be measured. For this, a clear plastic ventilation hood will be placed over the head for a short time. Participants will stay at the NIH Clinical Center for 4 1/2 days. They can watch TV, do work, do schoolwork, and other quiet activities. A small sensor will be placed under participants skin to measure blood glucose. For part of the study, participants will be housed in a small room called a metabolic chamber. They will wear a heart monitor. Participants will walk on a treadmill for 30 minutes each day at a comfortable speed. For 3 days, participants will eat all their daily calories between 8 am and 2 pm. They will fast for the other 18 hours of the day. They can drink water. Participants will complete mixed meal tests. They will drink a liquid meal for breakfast. Then they will give blood samples via intravenous (IV) catheter. Participation will last for 5 days....
This randomized trial will determine the effects of internet cognitive behavioral therapy on measures of systemic inflammation in HIV-positive people receiving antiretroviral therapy.
To better understand the role of inflammation in COVID-19, we established the Michigan Medicine COVID-19 Cohort (M2C2). M2C2 is a funded and ongoing cohort which has currently enrolled over 1500 adult patients (≥18 years) with severe COVID-19 admitted at the University of Michigan. The purpose of M2C2 is to define the in-hospital course of these patients and understand the role of inflammation as a determinant of organ injury and outcomes in COVID-19.
The research objective of the UNITE Study is to assess device feasibility of ultrasound application to the spleen to assess its effect on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a pilot study with an off-the-shelf ultrasound GE device originally used for diagnostic applications. Specific Aims: 1. Determine the feasibility of splenic ultrasound with an ultrasound device in affecting physiological markers in COVID-19 infected patients between an ultrasound group versus a control group for the primary analyses; and 2. Evaluate the potential capabilities of splenic ultrasound in affecting additional outcomes in COVID-19 infected patients in the ultrasound group compared to a control group.
The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to compare the incidence, intensity and duration of postoperative pain following the removal of root canal obturation materials canals using rotary (ProTaper Universal or Hyflex EDM) or reciprocating file (Reciproc Blue or WaveOne Gold) systems. The null hypothesis tested was that there is no difference in postoperative pain following the retreatment procedure between the four systems used.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the study drug PBI-4050 to determine the safety, tolerability and concentration profile in the blood when the drug is given to healthy volunteers as multiple doses and different dosing regimens over a period of 14 days.
