This randomized-controlled trial examines an online dissonance-based body image program for college students called the EVERYbody Project-Connect. The online (videoconferencing) intervention will be delivered using expert peer leaders in three 90-minute weekly sessions. Expert peer leaders for the EVERYbody Project-Connect are college students with lived and/or academic expertise within both body image and diversity and equity domains who are trained and screened for facilitation readiness. The comparison intervention is a passive, time-matched self-help condition using The Body Is Not An Apology Workbook by Sonya Renee Taylor. Both interventions explore diversity and representation within sociocultural body image pressures and provide tools for body acceptance. The study is open to all college students in a universal prevention and risk factor reduction framework. Outcomes will be assessed before and after the three weeks of intervention and at three-month follow-up.
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Eating Disorders (ED) are severe and persistent disturbances that are associated with significant harm. These two disorders have many clinical similarities, including craving and behavioral loss of control. Recently, craving for food has been described in newly abstinent patients with SUD. the aim of the study is to verify the hypothesis of addiction transfer based on common neurobiological mechanisms between substance craving and food craving, that postulates that food craving would correspond to an attempt to regulate substance craving (or vice versa).
When untreated, eating disorders present with tremendous burdens to affected active duty Service members and Veterans and their families, and are very costly to the DoD and VA healthcare system. A comparative effectiveness study with state-of-the-art virtual treatment for BN and BED specifically adapted for testing with the Veteran population and other underrepresented eating disorder populations will lead to major improvements in clinical outcomes. The treatment will be integrated with VA's newest telehealth technology to profoundly enhance access to care anywhere, at any time. This trial of therapist-led and self-help CBT treatments, combined with our expert panel methods to inform VA Clinical Practice Guidelines for Eating Disorders and plans for dissemination, will accelerate the pace for the transition of results both for large-scale deployment in the VA system and for real-world impact among diverse and underrepresented eating disorder populations.
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of new neurostimulation techniques in patients with eating disorders. The primary aim of our proposal is to test a reduction in symptoms of alteration of eating behaviors, such as always thinking about food or binge eating, in a sample of 30 patients, aged between 18 and 65, with diagnosis of Bulimia Nervosa or Binge Eating Disorder. Of these patients, 10 will undergo to a protocol of vagal transcutaneous stimulation in the ear (tVNS) and targeted cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E), another 10 to a protocol of transcranial magnetic stimulation (rtms) and CBT-E and another 10 to a protocol of only tergeted CBT-E, comparing the results obtained in the three groups under study. Secondary purposes of this project are the assessment of the effects of auricular vagal transcutaneous stimulation and of transcranial magnetic stimulation on depressive symptoms associated with eating disorder, on the inflammatory profile, on cardiovascular autonomic control, neuronal excitability, functional connectivity and on the quality of life of these patients. In order to achieve the objectives of this research project, we will perform a national, interventional on a medical device, monocentric study, controlled in 3 parallel and randomized groups with a 1:1:1 allocation ratio. 30 patients will be recruited at the Day Hospital of the Psychiatry Unit of the Fondazione.
Project RISE is a randomized control trial. The intervention consists of four modules that focus on multiple aspects of interoception including: body awareness, body sensations/movement, eating, health and self-care, emotional awareness, and understanding the self in relation to others. The comparator condition is called "Health Habits" and is matched for time and attention; participants complete modules related to healthy habits such as financial planning, hygiene, stretching, and healthy eating. Variables of interest include self-report measures of interoception, eating pathology, suicidality, physiological measures of interoception (electrocardiograph; ECG; pain tolerance measured via algometer), and an implicit association test (IAT) with death and life stimuli (meant to measure implicit associations with suicidality). The population will be college students, with current or past suicidality or low interoception.
This study aims to test the effectiveness of an evidence-based eating- disorder prevention program specifically targeted for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) compared to an educational control group. The Diabetes Body Project (DBP), is an adaptation of the Body Project which is the only eating disorder prevention program to have repeatedly produced effects when evaluated by independent researchers, produced stronger effects than credible alternative interventions, and affected objective outcomes. DBP has been adapted slightly for individuals with T1D who are at ultra-high risk for eating disorders. The study aims to test the effectiveness of the DBP of reducing body image concerns and reducing eating pathology and improving glycemic control.
Background: Over 60% of Canadians are overweight or obese and more than half have a history of a mental illness. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for people living with obesity to manage their weight even after undergoing bariatric surgery. These difficulties in combination with the stress of the pandemic can cause significant declines in mental health and well-being. Psychotherapy ("talk therapy") has been shown to be effective in helping to reduce mental health and disordered eating symptoms in patients managing obesity; however, there is limited data in the context of COVID-19. Objective: This study will examine whether providing a convenient and accessible telephone-based psychotherapy during and potentially after the COVID-19 pandemic will lead to better mental health and disordered eating-related outcomes in patients managing obesity after weight loss surgery. Hypothesis: Relative to the control group, those receiving psychotherapy will have lower mental health distress and eating disorder symptoms. Methods: Participants recruited from 4 weight loss surgery programs across Ontario will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1) Control (7 weekly non-structured check-in emails and access to online COVID-19 related mental health resources) or 2) Tele-CBT (a 7-session telephone-based cognitive behavioural therapy [a type of "talk therapy"] intervention focused on developing coping skills and specifically designed for weight loss surgery patients). Participants will complete measures of mental health distress, eating behaviours and a psychological distress scale prior to and immediately following the intervention. Implications: If Tele-CBT is found to improve post-pandemic mental health distress and eating behaviours, it could be routinely offered to patients with other chronic medical conditions as a resource to help manage psychological distress and mental health concerns emerging during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
While eating disorders in males are often overlooked, up to 7 million men in the United States will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime. Critically, men are less likely to seek treatment for an eating disorder compared to women. Therefore, prevention programs that target male-specific eating disorder risk factors prior to the development of an eating or appearance-related disorder are crucial in reducing eating disorders in this population. Preliminary work by our group established the initial efficacy of a novel program, the Body Project: More than Muscles (MTM) compared to assessment-only control. This study will replicate and extend this research by comparing MTM to a time and attention matched control used in previous eating disorder prevention work, media advocacy (MA).
