Filter by:The purpose of this study is to develop and test a brief program to help overweight people become more physically active. We plan to design a program that teaches people how to become more active by identifying how fitness enables them to live their lives better. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires and wear a device that tracks their exercise for 1 week. If accepted into the study, they will receive a 1 day program designed to help them exercise more. Then they will receive phone calls and emails for support after the program. Finally, participants will come in 3 and 6 months after the program to complete the same questionnaires and wear the exercise tracker again. The study is primarily interested in increasing exercise levels, and so we hope to see participants exercising more after the program than they were before. We will also ask them questions (via the questionnaires) that tell us the degree to which they are exercising based on their one desires and values, as opposed to doing it because they were told to.
The Influence of 5-HTTLPR and BDNF Polymorphisms on Anxiety and Mood After Acute Exercise. Introduction: The 5-HTTLPR (SLC6A4) and BDNF (Val66Met) polymorphism presents an action on the modulation of human behavior and has received great attention as a risk factor for several psychiatric disorders. In recent years, a growing number of studies have evaluated the association between these polymorphisms and personality traits related to anxiety and depression. Objectives: To determine the frequencies of 5-HTTLPR and BDNF polymorphisms in a college students population; To determine the influence of 5-HTTLPR and BDNF polymorphisms on mood states and anxiety after acute physical exercise. Material and Methods: Four hundred (400) College students will be assessed. In the first phase of the study, the following procedures will be performed: Screening, Aerobic Fitness Assessment (Step Test), Questionnaires (PAR-Q, Habitual Physical Activity Level, Beck Anxiety and Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety, and Perceived Stress Scale), blood sample collection and genotyping. In the second phase of the study, two (2) groups with or without polymorphisms will be selected (for each gene). These groups will be submitted to four conditions (three experimental conditions and one control condition), carried out randomly and separated by an interval of 1 week. In the experimental Conditions the volunteers will perform treadmill exercises sessions (30 minutes) in three different intensities (light, moderate and vigorous) and will respond to the Borg Scale at 10, 20 e 30 minutes. In the control condition the volunteers will be instructed to remain seated (quiet rest), relaxed and silent for 30 minutes. In both conditions, the volunteers will complete the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and State-Anxiety (STAY), 05 (five) minutes before and, 5 (five) and 20 (twenty) minutes following the interventions.
The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of acute beetroot juice supplementation on exercise performance and cardiometabolic health in obese individuals with secondary cardiometabolic complications. Additionally, we will determine if the ergogenic health benefits of beetroot juice is due to the nitric oxide compound within the product, the antioxidant compound within the product, or a combination of the two compounds.

A method has been developed to measure in vivo adipose kinetics and turnover rates, which is a substantive departure from previous indirect and in vitro approaches. This technique involves drinking deuterium (2H)-labeled water, with an initial ramp-up to increase body water 2H enrichment, followed by daily intake to maintain enrichment values. The 2H from the heavy water is incorporated into the DNA of the dividing cells, as well as the lipid component, providing measures of cell formation, lipid synthesis, and adipose turnover. The objective of the proposed study is to enroll women who are overweight (sedentary or physically active) in order to collect 2H-enriched adipose tissue specimens that will be utilized to establish this innovative 2H-labeling protocol at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. This study will also assess adipose kinetics in individuals with different levels of physical activity to better understand the association between in vivo adipose cell kinetics, physical activity, and metabolic health in humans.
The purposes of this study are to compare the effects of core stabilization exercises on pain intensity, functional disability and lumbar stability between using and not using the Swiss ball in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain.
Regular exercise is a cornerstone in the prevention and the management of cardio-metabolic risk factors. Some of the beneficial effect of exercise training occurs through metabolic flexibility' enhancement. Metabolic flexibility is the ability to respond or adapt to conditional changes in metabolic demand, and previous literature has shown that individuals living with obesity have an impaired metabolic flexibility compared to lean individuals. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence on the impact of sprint interval training on metabolic flexibility and whether this translates into clinically meaningful outcomes. This study will evaluate the impact of 4-week sprint interval training in normal weight individuals as well as individuals living with obesity on acute and chronic metabolic flexibility, irisin secretion and insulin sensitivity.
Recent drug improvement (e.g. abiraterone or enzalutamide) for castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients has improved survival. As treatment strategies improve and patients live longer, patients must cope with their treatment-induced adverse effects. Improving levels of physical activity (PA) and less amounts of sitting time (e.g. sedentary behavior, SB) could have a positive impact on patient's health, non-cancer mortality, and quality of life and potentially improve survival. The role of PA has not yet been examined in CRPC patients, which is a clear unmet need. No specific PA guidelines exist for CRPC patients, but specific guidelines are warranted because of advanced disease stage, reduced performance score and comorbidity. It is to be expected that the PA level of CRPC patients is lower compared to non-CRPC patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). This study aims to determine the optimal starting physical therapy prescription in CRPC patients receiving second line hormone treatment.
