Filter by:Study Hypothesis: This study is designed as an integral part of the development of new or improved features or components of the Bravo® pH Monitoring System and may serve verification and validation purposes The study population will include a group of healthy volunteers (Group A) and a group of symptomatic patients with known or suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease (Group B). Group A: Healthy volunteers will not undergo invasive procedure. These volunteers may be asked to carry the capsule and\or Bravo Recorder. These procedures will serve to evaluate different technical matters such as human interface, ergonomic aspects and communication performances of the system Group B: Symptomatic patients will undergo invasive procedure, including Bravo capsule delivery, positioning and attachment. Confirmation of capsule attachment may be done by endoscopically. These procedures will serve to evaluate overall system performance in actual clinical setup, for instance: Bravo Recorder performance including communication quality, human interface and similar, ergonomics of delivery device, pH Capsule performance, etc. Subjects from both study groups as well as physician may be asked to provide feedback on the procedure and/or document their activities during the procedure.
The aim of this study is to establish a dose-related effect of a selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist compared to placebo on residual symptoms (regurgitation with or without heartburn) in subjects with GERD who have persistent symptoms while on PPI therapy.
The purpose of this study is to confirm the safety profile / factors which impact safety and efficacy of Nexium capsules in daily clinical usage for the patients who have been prescribed Nexium for "gastric ulcer", "duodenal ulcer", "anastomotic ulcer", "reflux oesophagitis", "non-erosive reflux disease", or "Zollinger-Ellison syndrome"
Administration of esomeprazole 20 mg to subjects who still had heartburn after receiving rabeprazole 10 mg once daily for at least 4 weeks will result in statistically significant improvement of heartburn after 8-week treatment.
Endoscopy is a widely used modality for the diagnosis and classification of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and the extent of esophageal mucosal breaks on endoscopy can be assessed. However, there were some limitation in diagnosis of GERD using endoscopy 1. More than half of patients with GERD reveal no visible abnormality on conventional endoscopy, it is possible that minute mucosal changes are underestimated by conventional endoscopy due to the limitation of visual ability 2. In addition of uncertainty in detecting mucosal breaks, uncertainty in describing severity of mucosal injury can lead to inconsistency among interpreters. Interobserver agreement regarding diagnosis and classification of GERD using endoscopy is unsatisfactory to apply daily practice. Thus, the development of a new method to define the intra-esophageal injury for use in daily practice is a worthwhile endeavor and developed, such as narrow−band imaging (NBI), Fuji Intelligent Chromoen−doscopy (FICE) and i-scan. Among them, i-scan technology is the most recently developed image enhancing technology, which consists of three modes of image enhancement, i.e. surface enhancement (SE), contrast enhancement (CE), and tone enhancement (TE). Thus, the investigators examined the hypothesis that i-scan can improve the detection rate of reflux esophagitis and inter-observer agreement between endoscopists compared with conventional white light (WL) endoscopic examination.
To investigate the efficacy and safety of PARIET twice daily (b.i.d.) in patients with Proton Pump Inhibitor-resistant reflux esophagitis
GERD is a common condition in the western world. In most cases, the diagnostic is established by good response to empiric proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy. When the patient symptoms are refractory to therapy, multiple invasive tests are available. The results of those tests (EGD, manometry, Ph monitoring and impedance) are clues that the physician use together to establish the diagnostic. No test however can be use alone because of their poor specificity and sensitivity. Recently, microscopy has been used to detect dilated intercellular space in between distal esophageal cells tissue; unfortunately this marker again failed to diagnose GERD. In search of more sensitive and specific markers of GERD, we propose to assess if acid exposure affects: 1) gene and proteins expression in the esophageal/post-cricoid area tissue; and 2) local impedance of the mucosa. The secondary aim of this proposal is to determine if correlation exists between the two approaches.
The study objective is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of TIF among a broad range of GERD patients treated in routine clinical practice at multiple centers across the United States.
The study objective is to evaluate the relative merits, safety and effectiveness of transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) in proton pump inhibitor (PPI) dependent GERD patients compared with sham procedure.
The goal of this project is to determine the long-term health outcome of children diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux (GER). We are inviting subjects that were previously followed in the Pediatric GI programs at Massachusetts General and Children's Hospital, Boston. We have compiled a database of more than 200 subjects that completed diagnostic testing for GER in the 1970's and 1980's. Subjects are being contacted initially by mail using a previously approved recruitment letter. Subjects that fail to respond to this recruitment letter are called by phone. In each case, contact information has been abstracted from the Children's Hospital database. Subjects are then given the opportunity to complete a questionnaire either by phone or in hard copy. Subjects receive no compensation for their participation in this study. Subjects will be compared to controls. Controls will complete the same questionnaire as the subjects. Inclusion of potential controls will be determined by a lack of medical history of gastroenterological diseases before the age of 21 and whether the potential control was born within a year of a subject in the study. Controls will receive $25 to participate in the study.
