Filter by:This is an observational research study whose purposes are to see: 1. if 40 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy sessions at 1.5 atmospheres (HBOT 1.5) or more (60, or 80 HBOT's) help, worsen, or have no effect on subjects with chronic TBI/PCS (Traumatic Brain Injury/Post-Concussion Syndrome) and/or PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). 2. if improvements or worsening of symptoms can be recorded with computerized and written tests for memory and thinking, and with questionnaires about the subject's quality of life and health. 3. determine the long-term outcome of the treatment. 4. confirm, in large numbers of study participants at multiple sites nationwide, the strong positive results obtained in pilot studies
Background: - New studies in human genetics have revealed information about genetic connections to memory and motor behavior. Researchers are interested in investigating the role of genetics in motor learning, in conjunction with related studies taking place in the Human Motor Control Section of the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS). Participants in motor learning studies conducted at NINDS will be asked to provide blood samples for further evaluation. Objectives: - To create a repository of blood samples from patients and healthy subjects who are participating in NINDS motor learning studies. Eligibility: - Individuals between 18 and 100 years of age who are or will be participating in motor learning research studies at the National Institutes of Health. Design: - Blood draws for genetic testing will usually be done on the same day as the motor learning study. The goal of this study is to examine the effectiveness the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram (also known by the trade name "Lexapro") in reducing desire to self-harm and actual self-harming among young adults with borderline personality disorder who are also currently depressed. Subjects will receive either escitalopram or placebo for eight weeks. During this time subjects will be make weekly visits to see the psychiatrist and record their thoughts and feelings several times each day using an electronic diary.
The purpose of this study is to implement a unique evidence-based intervention program to help military families deal with the critical issue of combat injury and its impact on current and future family health and functioning. The study is a randomized study. The study will compare the effects of the newly designed FOCUS-CI (Families OverComing Under Stress - Combat Injury) with the existing standard of care (SoC) at three military medical rehabilitation sites (Walter Reed Amry Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center and Madigan Army Medical Center) on key aspects of family health and functioning.
Background: - Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common childhood disorder that often does not respond to standard treatments. Researchers are exploring the role that a brain chemical called glutamate plays in symptoms of OCD, and are testing a drug called riluzole that reduces glutamate to see if changing the levels of glutamate in the brain will help treat the disorder. - Researchers are interested in using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), a type of magnetic imaging, to take pictures of various chemicals in the brain. MRS images will be used to detect changes in brain levels of glutamate in children taking riluzole. Objectives: - To use magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the levels of glutamate in the brains of children and adolescents who have been taking riluzole. Eligibility: - Children and adolescents ages 7 to 17 who are enrolled in the current NIMH riluzole trial protocol (05-M-0225), who are able to lie still in the scanner for about an hour each time, and who are willing to have up to three MRS scans. Design: - Researchers will study some children/adolescents before they begin to take the study medication riluzole or placebo these children will have an MRS scan before starting the study medication. The scan will take about an hour. - About 2 weeks after reaching the full dose on the study medication, participants will have a second hour-long MRS scan. Participants will have a third MRS scan after being on the study medication for 12 weeks. - Some children who have already completed 12 weeks on riluzole or placebo, and are now taking riluzole, will have only one MRS scan.
The primary purpose of the study is to assess long-term safety and tolerability of Edivoxetine in pediatric participants with attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).
RATIONALE: The influenza vaccine may help prevent flu in patients who have undergone stem cell transplant. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well the influenza vaccine works in preventing flu in patients who have undergone stem cell transplant and in healthy volunteers.
Objective: To examine respiratory/physiological and subjective responding as well as genetic transmission among offspring of parents with a history of or current panic disorder (PD) diagnosis to determine whether diagnoses/symptoms, endophenotypes, or genetic profiles in offspring is differentially related to parent PD subtypes (i.e., respiratory and non-respiratory panic). Study population: Approximately 400 offspring of about 200 parents with current or past PD. Approximately 200 offsping/100 parents with PD will be enrolled at NIH/NIMH and the remainder at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Design: A high-risk family design will be used wherein parents with either a current or past diagnosis of PD who have an offspring(s) (ages 9 to 20) will be recruited. <TAB> Outcome measures: Outcome measures will include physiological recordings of respiratory, cardiac, and electrodermal responding during a 10 minute baseline followed by 15 minutes of 5% carbon dioxide enriched air (CO2). Research participants also will complete parent and child self-report measures and provide a DNA sample using a saliva protocol. The purpose of this research study is to learn about the efficacy of a medication called varenicline (Chantix) in treating ADHD in adults and in reducing cigarette smoking in adults with ADHD. The investigators hypothesize that ADHD symptomatology in adults with ADHD will be improved with varenicline treatment. The investigators also hypothesize that varenicline treatment will result in significant reductions in cigarette smoking. Another objective of this study is to more fully evaluate the response and tolerability to varenicline in this group of cigarette smoking adults with ADHD.
RATIONALE: Studying blood samples from cancer patients undergoing pain treatment in the laboratory may help doctors learn more about how pain drugs work in the body. It may also help doctors predict how patients will respond to treatment. PURPOSE: This research study is looking at fentanyl in patients with cancer.
