Filter by:To date, all the electrophysiological methods for auditory testing rely on the measure on synchronous evoked auditory nerve activity. This measure only takes into account the response of the first action potential in every auditory fibber, but provides no information about the neural response during a sustained activity. This can explain why in experimental models, a loss of more of 80% of auditory nerve fibbers cannot be detected by usual electrophysiological measurements. In this study we aim at investigating the global spontaneous and sound evoked auditory nerve activity by recording directly the electrical field by an electrode placed directly on the auditory nerve of subjects during a skull base surgical procedure. We expected to demonstrated differences in the electrical activity between subjects with or without hearing loss.

Despite being more likely than typical hearing children to experience disruptive behavior problems, children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) rarely receive behavioral interventions to prevent the long-term costly outcomes of behavior problems. This pilot project will systematically adapt an evidence-based behavioral parent training (BPT) intervention to increase its acceptability and relevance for parents of young DHH children. Two parents of DHH children will be trained in the adapted BPT for DHH children. They will each deliver the intervention to five families with DHH preschool-aged children.
Age-related hearing loss is highly prevalent and hearing health care is underutilized. The primary objective of the proposed randomized controlled trial is to investigate the efficacy of a community health worker (CHW)-delivered hearing loss intervention program. A preceding pilot study demonstrated preliminary effectiveness of the intervention program in reducing self-reported hearing handicap, and highlighted its acceptability among the target demographic. The proposed trial will now expand upon lessons learned through previous pilot studies and expand to other affordable residences for low-to-moderate income older adults in Baltimore. Primary outcome measurements will investigate intervention effects on hearing handicap, with secondary measurements investigating effects on domains such as social isolation and quality of life. This trial is a first-in-kind investigation of a novel community-based intervention that addresses hearing loss in a vulnerable, urban population.
