Comfort Score During Ultrasound Guided Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus Block Placement in Elderly Patients

Results from our preliminary study accepted as e-poster presentation on ESRA (Bordeaux, September 2012.) showed significant difference in Comfort Score during Ultrasound Guided Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus block (US-SCB) between young and elderly population. However, it is unknown whether the difference in Comfort score (1) was associated with reduction of local anesthetic (LA) volume in elderly or it is attributed to elderly population by itself. The aim of the study is to compare the Comfort score during US-SCB placement in elderly patients undergoing upper limb surgery performed with two different volumes of local anesthetics (20 ml vs 32 ml).

Lactobacillus Reuteri in Treatment of Functional Abdominal Pain and Chronic Constipation in Children

Beneficial therapeutic effect of probiotics has been reported in children with irritable bowel syndrome, but not consistently in other functional gastrointestinal disorders. Although there is evidence that probiotics increase stool frequency and decrease stool consistency in healthy individuals the evidence for efficacy in constipation is limited. Children with functional abdominal pain (FAP) and constipation will be included in the study. Children with FAP will be randomized in one of two groups and will receive either L. reuteri in a daily dose of 108 CFU, or placebo during three months. Children with chronic constipation will receive either L. reuteri in a daily dose of 108 CFU and lactulose, or placebo and lactulose. Frequency and intensity of episodes of abdominal pain during and after intervention will be recorded in children with FAP. Frequency of defecation, stool consistency and need for lactulose will be recorded in children with chronic constipation.

Distribution of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Genotypes in Patients With Cervical Cancer From Croatia

Human papillomavirus (HPV) of high-risk genotype is a necessary risk factor in development of cervical cancer. There is a vaccine available to prevent cervical lesions associated with high-risk HPV genotypes 16 and 18. In Croatia HPV vaccination has not yet been introduced in obligatory vaccination schedule. The aim of this study is to describe the pre-vaccination distribution of HPV genotypes in women with high grade cervical squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and cervical cancer in Croatia. The investigators hypothesis is that HPV-16 is the most frequently found genotype but the distribution of other HPV genotypes is heterogeneous and includes genotypes currently not covered by vaccination.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Applications in Microarrays in Organ Transplantation

The current standard for biopsy-based diagnoses of dysfunction of kidney transplants is the Banff Classification which represents arbitrary international consensus. Recent data-driven approaches using molecular and conventional technologies indicate that mere consensus produces frequently incorrect diagnoses with potential harm to patients due to inappropriate treatment. To address this unmet need and improve diagnostics in the area of organ transplantation, the Alberta Transplant Applied Genomics Centre (ATAGC) has developed a new diagnostic system that combines the molecular and histopathological features of transplant biopsies, plus clinical and laboratory parameters, to create the first Integrated Diagnostic System. The present study will validate and refine this system in 500 prospectively unselected biopsies for clinical indications from American, Canadian and European centres in addition to 300 biopsies already collected. Due to a considerable interest and support from participating Centers, the study is further extended to 1500 prospective biopsies. Thus this is the extension of the INTERCOM study (INTERCOMEX). In addition to demonstrating the feasibility and value of this System in routine patient care and clinical trials, the study will develop and optimize a transparent and user-friendly reporting format to communicate this information to clinicians and obtain detailed feedback on how this system can best improve patient care.
