Laboratory test overuse occurs when tests are ordered repetitively, without due consideration of impact on clinical status. Repetitive inpatient lab testing often provides limited value for patient outcomes while increasing healthcare costs, patient discomfort, and unnecessary transfusions and prolonging hospitalizations. The research study aims to reduce laboratory test overuse in hospitals through implementation of a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, and multi-faceted intervention bundle that includes audit and feedback reports, clinician education, clinical decision support tool, and patient infographics across 14 hospitals in Alberta.

Promoting Healthy Exercise to Conscientious Christians

Given the importance of reducing mortality-morbidity, more effective Physical Activity (PA) interventions are important, and the recently observed stabilizations of PI levels suggest that novel methods must be explored (Ozemek et al., 2019). This study aims to provide a select sedentary subpopulation with a customized intervention hypothesized to increase their PA adoption. Novel recruiting methods are used to identify a target subpopulation (based on multiple characteristics) that can be contacted in multiple sections of North America. We will intervene online and rigorously test the theoretical formulations that identify the subpopulation and the customized intervention.

Phe for Me? The Effects of L-Phe on PKU Carriers and Non-carriers

This is a clinical intervention study of PKU carriers (cases) and non-carriers (controls). Upon completing the informed consent process, participants will complete baseline measures of chronic mental health prior to the intervention (PHQ-9, GAD-7, BIS-11). Participants will attend the Human Nutraceutical Research Unit (HNRU) at the University of Guelph, fasted, and first undergo baseline measures of cognition and acute mental health (mood) and provide samples or saliva, urine and dried blood spots to evaluate phenylalanine (Phe), tyrosine (Tyr) and their metabolites (PAH pathway functioning) as well as for genetic testing of the PAH gene. Participants will also complete a brief questionnaire which will include age, sex, ethnicity, income, weight and height (measured using a stadiometer and calibrated weigh scale), and confirmation that participants arrived to the lab fasted (i.e. have only had water to drink and no other foods/ beverages prior to analyses). Blood pressure and heart rate will also be measured at baseline. Following baseline tests, participants will consume a pure L-Phe supplement dosed at 100 mg/kg mixed with 125 mL of water and 125mL of orange juice. Blood pressure and heart rate will be repeated at 1-hour post-L-Phe consumption. Two-hours postprandial, participants will repeat the cognitive tests and acute mental health (mood) assessment, blood pressure and heart rate measurement and provide follow-up saliva, urine and dried blood spot samples. Participants will also be asked to report any side effects they experienced with the L-Phe consumption.

Time-restricted Eating, Window Timing, Type 2 Diabetes Status and Sex on Glycemic Control

This study will evaluate the effectiveness of time-restricted eating (TRE), which is a form of intermittent fasting. When performing TRE, individuals consume all of their calories within a specific time window and then only consume water or other no calorie drinks the rest of the day. TRE is performed each day. There is no restriction on the quality or amount of food that people can consume during their eating window (ad libitum eating) with TRE, which can last anywhere from 4 to 12 hours. We are comparing three different 9-hour eating windows to determine whether the start and stop time of the eating window impact blood sugar control in individuals with obesity who also have or are at risk for type 2 diabetes. We also aim to determine if there are differences in the effects of the timing of eating window between males and females.

ARTEMIS - A Research Study to Look at How Ziltivekimab Works Compared to Placebo in People With a Heart Attack

The research study is being done to see if ziltivekimab can be used to treat people who were admitted to hospital because of a heart attack. Ziltivekimab might reduce development of heart disease, thereby preventing new heart attacks or strokes. Participants will either get ziltivekimab (active medicine) or placebo (a dummy medicine which has no effect on the body). Which treatment participants get is decided by chance. The chance of getting ziltivekimab or placebo is the same. Ziltivekimab is not yet approved in any country or region in the world. It is a new medicine that doctors cannot prescribe. The study will last for about 2 years.

Proof-of-concept Study Evaluating Subcutaneous Amlitelimab in Adult Participants With Moderate to Severe Hidradenitis Suppurativa

This is a parallel, Phase 2, 2-arm, double-blind, randomized, multicenter, multinational, placebo-controlled study to evaluate efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics (PK), and biological effects of treatment of subcutaneous injection of amlitelimab compared with placebo in male and female participants aged 18 to 70 years with moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). The purpose of this study is to measure standardized clinician reported and participant-reported outcomes (ClinRO and PRO), safety, and drug concentration. An optional long-term extension (LTE) period will assess chronic safety and efficacy over an additional 80 weeks of amlitelimab treatment. Study details include: - The study duration will be up to 116 weeks, including a 4-week Screening period, a 16-week double-blind treatment period (DBT), an optional 80-week LTE period and a 16-week post-treatment follow-up period. - All participants who complete the 16-week DBT period will be offered entry into an optional LTE. - Participants who do not wish to enter the optional LTE period or who stop treatment prior to Week 16 (Visit 6) or stop investigational medicinal product (IMP) administration prior to completing the LTE period will proceed into the 16-week post-treatment follow-up period. - The number of planned in clinic visits will be up to six during the DBT period with an additional nine during the LTE period, plus one post-treatment follow-up end-of-study visit. Up to 11 optional in clinic visits are allowed for participants who do not wish to self-administer IMP between scheduled in clinic visits during the LTE period.

Immersive Technology and Virtual Reality as a Health Support Tool in a Residence for the Elderly

The purpose of this clinical trial is to learn more about the potential for using virtual reality in older adults living in residences for elderly to maintain health (physical activity, cognitive activity, social behaviors). The main questions it aims to answer are: - To what extent can virtual reality be a tool to support health in older adults? - What are the support needs of older adults in learning to use this immersive technology? Participants are invited to complete 5 training sessions on the use of a virtual reality headset. At the beginning and end of each session, participants will complete a questionnaire on their perception of their experience. During the sessions, the participants are asked to test games that mobilize the upper limbs. Two learning modalities are set up in two separate groups. These modalities aim to test two different support formulas in order to compare the support needs of the elderly in the use and integration of virtual reality to support the activities and health of this population.
