Effect of Regular Electrotherapy in Patients With Chronic Non-specific Neck Pain and Low-back Pain

This randomized controlled double-blinded pilot trial was performed in the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Special Anesthesia and Pain Medicine between 2015 and 2018. Aim of the study was to assess the effect of regular electrotherapy applied on the spinal cord of patients with chronic non-specific neck pain and/or low-back pain. The hypothesis was that subjective feeling of pain, range of motion of the cervical and lumbar region, as well as the activity in daily living improved after weekly electrotherapy sessions for 30 min each.

US-Guided ESPB Versus TPVB on Acute and Chronic Pain After VATS

Postoperative acute and chronic pain is frequently observed in patients undergoing video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This prolongs the discharge time of patients and increases the frequency of postoperative pulmonary complications. Recently, alternative analgesic methods such as thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) and erector spinae plane block (ESPB), which are thought to have less side effects than thoracic epidural analgesia, have been used. Among these methods, ultrasound (US) guided TPVB is the most preferred method. In addition, ESPB application is increasing in patients undergoing VATS. In the literature, the number of cases performed with ESPB and randomized controlled prospective studies with ESPB are increasing. In this study, it is planned to compare the effects of US-guided TPVB and ESPB on postoperative acute and chronic pain in patients undergoing VATS.

Alcohol Use and Chronic Pain Among Primary Care Patients

Chronic pain and unhealthy drinking are common co-occurring conditions among patients presenting to primary care. Given their impact on functioning and medical outcomes, there would be considerable benefit to developing an accessible, easily utilized, integrative approach to reduce unhealthy alcohol use and pain that can be readily incorporated into the primary care setting. The objective of this study is to test a smartphone-based intervention for reducing unhealthy alcohol use and pain in primary care patients, determine the feasibility of implementing this intervention in the primary care setting, provide effect size estimates of the intervention on drinking and chronic pain outcomes.

Meditation Utilizing Signals From Electroencephalography in Chronic Pain (MUSE-PAIN) Study

This clinical investigation is a prospective, open-label, non-randomized, multi-center study. It is designed to assess the use of the Muse-S meditation system in patients with chronic pain based on clinical follow-up data and exploratory cold pressor testing. Baseline assessments will be taken prior to exposure to Muse-S. Subjects will be followed for 7 weeks for main study endpoints and will continue to be followed through 12 months during a study extension period.

Chronic Pain in COVID-19 Patients Discharged From Intensive Care Unit

More than six million French were affected by SARS-COV2 epidemic. About 20% of infected peoples were hospitalized, and about 5% were admitted to the intensive care units (ICU) for severe SARS-COV2 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) management. A spectrum of neuropsychiatric sequelae, specific for the ICU exposure, was already described, including post-intensive care syndrome and persistent pain. A growing body of evidence suggests the impact of SARS-COV2 exposure on the occurrence of neurological disorders and chronic pain syndrome development in COVID-19 patients. Taking together, one can expect a large number of patients discharged from ICU after severe COVID-19 with high prevalence of persistent pain and psychological disorders. To date, no study has evaluated neither the incidence of persistant pains in ICU COVID-19 survivors, nor pain phenotypes. The knowledge of such data is crucial in order to anticipate the management of such patients by specialized pain team, and to quantify the possible incurred burden of care. Our study aims to evaluate the incidence of pain, pain localization and severity, associated pain-related psychological disorders, and to perform quantitative sensory testing in severe COVID-19 patients, admitted to the ICU for more than 48 hours and successfully discharged home during the first French pandemic wave.
