Filter by:Since obesity and plasma fibrinogen levels are important CVD risk factors in the adults, and since childhood obesity is a major risk factor for adult obesity and also because it is not established whether or not this is due to an increase in the FSR of fibrinogen, the investigators set up the studies with the following specific aims: 1. To investigate the metabolism of fibrinogen and VLDL apoB-100, CVD risk factors, in childhood obesity by measuring their fractional synthetic rate (FSR) compared to lean age and sex matched controls 2. To determine the outcome of a three month non-pharmacological intervention (physical exercise combined with controlled diet) to reduce weight on the FSR of fibrinogen and apoB-100 3. To determine the relationship between FSR of fibrinogen and IL-6 in obese children and its potential implications on CVD before and after the non-pharmacological intervention 4. To determine other CVD risk factors, PAI-1 levels, D-Dimer concentration, homocysteine, insulin, free fatty acid, HDL & LDL cholesterol and blood pressure in response to weight reduction (as consequence of a combined program of diet and exercise).
This study will determine the effects of beneficial compounds of plant foods, such as pomegranate on cardiovascular health. This will be tested by asking healthy males to eat a high fat ground beef patty with pomegranate juice (PJ), pomegranate extract (PomX) or water and then measuring blood vessel dilation (endothelial function) by blood flow We also will measure the amount of Nitric Oxide (NO) in your blood and urine samples and sugar and insulin in blood. Healthy men have been chosen for this study because eating high fat hamburger patties can easily mimic in them the condition that causes atherosclerosis. The results from this study may help to explain how high fat foods can be harmful to the body and how beneficial plant foods can have on cardiovascular function
This study evaluates the ability of small primary care practices to 1) implement point-of-care and population management quality improvement strategies to improve cardiovascular quality of care (e.g., clinical decision support, patient education and counseling, or referral to smoking quit lines), and 2) implement the PopHealth performance measurement software to evaluate performance on the ABCS (aspirin when appropriate, blood pressure control, cholesterol management, and when applicable, smoking cessation) and allow regional benchmarking. This minimal risk study is a practice-randomized trial to determine a) whether point of care strategies improve ABCS performance measures compared to baseline, and b) whether adding locally tailored population management strategies to POC strategies improves performance on the ABCS measures more than POC strategies alone.
This study is a Phase II, placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized trial in 480 participants with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) or ASCVD-risk equivalents (for example, diabetes and familial hypercholesterolemia) and elevated LDL-C despite maximum tolerated dose of LDL-C lowering therapies to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of ALN-PCSSC injection(s).
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a polypill strategy containing aspirin (100 mg), ramipril (2.5, 5 or 10 mgs), and atorvastatin (40 mgs) compared with the standard of care (usual care according to the local clinical practices at each participating country) in secondary prevention of major cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal ischemic stroke, and urgent revascularization) in elderly patients with a recent myocardial infarction.

Aim of the study is to investigate long-term effects of CarelessTM, a Mangifera indica fruit powder on microcirculation and endothelial function after supplementation of 4 weeks. Effects will be investigated with 100mg and 300mg CarelessTM and compared to placebo.
The purpose of this randomized, cross-over study, is to ascertain if ticagrelor, but not prasugrel or clopidogrel, is associated to an improved endothelial function as assessed with peripheral arterial tonometry and markers of endothelial function measurement in post-ACS patients.
The objective of this study is to determine if primary care practice support accelerates the dissemination and implementation of patient-centered outcome results (PCOR) findings to improve heart health and increases primary care practices' capacity to incorporate other PCOR findings in the future.
The aim of this observational study is twofold. The primary hypothesis being tested is that initial(first) high sensitivity Tn <5ng/l (limit of detection) combined with an ECG with no ischaemic changes is superior as an accelerated diagnostic tool/strategy compared to TIMI score (<2), GRACE <75 and HEART score ≤ 3. (Hs tn T- Roche elecsys HS tn T) and also against HS troponin at the 99th percentile (<15ng/l with nonischaemic changes)- again all scored with initial (first tn ) only. The second aim is to directly compare the three established methods of risk stratifying patients (predicting risk in suspected heart attacks) namely, the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE), Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) and HEART score in the era of high sensitivity troponins performs best.
