Antithrombotic Activities of a Novel Yoghurt Drink: a Postprandial Study

The project aims to investigate the antithrombotic activity of the novel yoghurt drink enriched with polar lipids derived from ovine milk. The health claims the formulated novel or functional food on EFSA guidelines "The scientific requirements for health claims related to antioxidants, oxidative damage and cardiovascular health" and in a particular paragraph 5.4, "Claims on reduced platelet aggregation" "Platelet hyperactivity and hypercoagulability states are more commonly observed in subjects with cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. Healthy subjects or participants at very low risk of CV disease normally have non-activated circulating platelets. Reducing platelet aggregation in subjects with platelet activation during sustained exposure to the food/constituent (e.g., four weeks) would be a beneficial physiological effect". Within this investigation, the postprandial effects of this novel yoghurt drink against platelet aggregation are going to be studied ex vivo in blood from healthy human subjects as described in previously established procedures.

Developing a Team-Delivered Intervention for Smoking and Hazardous Drinking for Primary Care Veterans With Cardiovascular Diseases

In this study, the investigators are interested in learning how patients feel about and are impacted by a new approach for the primary care team to use to talk to patients about heart disease and health behaviors. The investigators are looking to recruit around 40 Veterans from Buffalo and Syracuse to be in this study. What it will entail is being randomly assigned to one of two conditions. If patients are assigned to the first condition, their upcoming primary care appointment will be extended by about 5 minutes because a Health Educator will join the end of that appointment. If they are assigned to the second condition they would have their typical primary care appointment. Beyond that, both conditions are quite similar. They will have an individual meeting following the primary care appointment with the Health Educator, two phone booster meetings at 2 and 4 weeks, and information about an optional app that they have the choice to use to help them track some health behaviors.

The Role of South Asian vs European Origins on Circulating Regenerative Cell Exhaustion

ORIGINS-RCE is an observational, cross-sectional, two-arm study aimed at determining if an individual's ethnic origin influences the number of blood vessel-forming stem cells in the bloodstream. Circulating progenitor cells will be enumerated and the distribution patterns of these cell types will be assessed to determine if these parameters differ between individuals of South Asian origin and European origin. Specifically, this study will evaluate if differential regenerative cell exhaustion (RCE) may account, at least in part, for the differences in cardiovascular risk reported between individuals of South Asian vs European origin.
