Filter by:Asthma is a common respiratory disease of unknown etiology which currently affects approximately 7.5 % of the adult population ( ). Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways. Airway inflammation is evident not only in patients with fatal asthma but also in mild asthmatics ( ). Oxidant stress, defined as inadequately controlled generation of toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cells or tissues is a common feature of inflammation, and has also been documented in asthma ( , ). However, the current understanding of the relationship between the inflammation and the oxidant stress in asthmatic airways is poor. Does oxidant stress contribute to the expression of asthmatic phenotypes independently of inflammation? If so, could asthmatics benefit from supplementation of antioxidants? These questions have been nagging us since our laboratory provided credible evidence of oxidant injury in the airways of allergic asthmatics ( ). The purpose of our study is to more precisely determine 1/ the pathophysiologic role of oxidative stress, and 2/ usefulness of antioxidant therapy using vitamin E in allergic asthma.
This open label single blind study will determine the safety of albuterol sulfate dry powder in a novel inhaler by observing for the potential occurrence of reflex bronchial constriction after inhalation of increasing doses of the compound.
The researchers propose to study the airways of asthmatics given TPI ASM8 for 14 days, and examine the protective effects on allergen-induced bronchoconstriction, hyperresponsiveness and airway inflammation.
This is a single centre, double-blind, randomised, parallel group, repeated dose asthmatic subjects. Subjects will receive AER 001 (60 mgs) or placebo twice daily for 28 days. Before and after treatment subjects will be experimentally challenged with inhaled allergen to induce decreases in lung function. The primary outcome is late phase response to allergen as measured by the average percent change in FEV1 from 4-10 hours following allergen. Because AER 001 is a Th2 anti-inflammatory, it is hypothesized that AER 001 treatment will inhibit the late phase response to allergen challenge.
This is a single center, double-blind, randomised parallel group design study to investigate the effects of AER 001 on the late phase asthmatic resonse in asthmatic subjects. AER 001 is to be administered subcutaneously (25 mg, once daily) for 28 days. The asthmatic subjects will be challenged with allergen both before and after AER 001 treatment (at screen and at Day 28). The primary outcome will be late phase sthmatic response (the max drop in FEV1 from 4-10 hours after an allergen challenge).
The purpose of the study is to investigate, whether the FeNO concentration of asthmatic children is influenced differently by inhaled corticosteroid compared to inhaled corticosteroid + long acting beta agonist. The study hypothesis is that the FeNO concentration is more decreased in patients with a combination therapy compared to those with a corticosteroid mono therapy.
The study is meant to establish a one-step challenge with grass-pollen in patients sensitized for grass-pollen. Therefore the investigators compare a multi-step challenge with grass-pollen with an one-step challenge in order to survey the repeatability and safety.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a short course of subcutaneous immunotherapy is efficacious in mite induced asthma. The efficacy is based on reduction in control medication.
Given that asthma results from a complex interaction between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors and rates of childhood asthma are increasing, primary prevention has to focus on modifiable aspects such as nutrition. There a implications from epidemiology that food supplementation with probiotics given to atopic mothers in pregnancy and during lactation can prevent the development allergies in the offspring. Children with atopic dermatitis are at increased risk (up to 80%) of developing persistent respiratory tract disease. Our trial examined whether probiotics are able to prevent allergic sensitization and allergic asthma when given to 6-24 month old infants at an increased risk of allergies.
This study is to designed to test the role of complement in the late asthmatic response to allergen challenge in mild asthma, as an indicator of the possible role of complement in the broader asthmatic population.
