Filter by:Premature babies often require breathing support during their neonatal intensive care unit stay. This is because their lungs are not fully developed to perform the work of breathing on their own. Although breathing support can be provided via a breathing tube, it is preferable to provide breathing support non-invasively from a breathing machine which is then connected to a mask or prongs placed on the baby's nose. In premature babies born under 32 weeks gestation, a commonly used mode of non-invasive breathing support is called Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV). In this mode, the breathing machine provides 2 levels of support: one is the constant distending pressure to keep the lungs open and the other provides additional 'breaths' on top of that distending pressure. This is to mimic regular breathing. These breaths are set at a fixed rate and pressure. Although NIPPV protects the lungs from injury caused by a breathing tube, the breaths are not in sync with the baby's own breathing effort. Another mode of non-invasive breathing support recently being used in premature infants called Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA). When NAVA is provided non-invasively using a mask or prongs similar to NIPPV, it is called Non-invasive NAVA (NIV-NAVA). During NIV-NAVA a special feeding tube is used that detects the baby's own breathing movement from the electrical signal of the baby's diaphragm and feeds back to the machine which then provides a 'top-up' to the baby's own breath. This top-up breath also provides only as much pressure as the baby needs on top on their own breathing effort. Therefore, this is thought to be in sync with the baby's own breathing effort. However, it is not known if this mode of ventilation leads to improved sleep, improved brain oxygen levels, reduced discomfort and improved functioning of the diaphragm. The investigators aim to examine these indices in this research project.
New working environments (digitalization, flexibilization) can lead to increased levels of stress. A balanced work-life balance is therefore important in order to prevent negative effects of stress on mental health. This study investigates, 1. how stress, recovery, nutritional behavior, resilience and sleep behavior are related to the changed working conditions. 2. how standardized nutritional training affects individual body composition (measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analyses, BIA), stress perception, burn-out symptoms and sleep.
This study examines the effectiveness of a biodynamic lighting intervention on the sleep, cognitive functions, and alertness of adults working from home. The biodynamic intervention is an innovative lighting solution that intends to harness both visual and non-visual effects of lighting through delivering varying intensities and spectra during working hours according to a preset protocol.
Sleep is an important part of the healing process, and patients admitted to the hospital often report poor sleep. Patients have difficulty not only falling sleep, but also staying asleep. Prior studies show that hospital noise may be a contributing factor, and in particular, sound level changes (which refers to an increase in sound above the background/baseline noise level) may cause arousals from sleep. Based on preliminary data, this study aims to use white noise to reduce the number of relevant sound level changes that occur during a night of sleep in the hospital. Using a randomized, cross-over design, the investigators aim to enroll 45 inpatient adults (age ≥ 65 years) to receive "active," white noise (white noised played at 57-60 decibels) on one night of their stay, and "inactive," white noise (white noise played at 45-50 decibels) on an alternate night. Three major primary outcomes will be investigated - 1) objective sleep duration as measured using actigraphy, 2)objectively measured sleep fragmentation using actigraphy, and 3) subjective sleep quality using the Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire. Secondary outcomes will include sound level changes in the room (measured using sound meters), as well as morning blood glucose (for diabetic/prediabetic patients) and blood pressure measurements. Delirium will be measured twice daily through the inpatient stay in a secondary analysis to compare levels of sleep fragmentation to delirium incidence.
To learn if Cognitive Behavior Therapy (called CBT), combined with either Bright Light Therapy (called BLT), methylphenidate, and/or melatonin, can help improve sleep and other related symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, and depression in cancer patients. This is an investigational study. In this study, BLT, Methylphenidate and Melatonin will be compared to their placebos.
Exposure to electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by mobile phones and devices with WIFI is on the rise and so is the EMF effects on sleep quality and well-being of individuals with high exposures to EMF. Some studies have shown poor sleep quality among individuals with long-term occupational exposure to EMF, and some have shown association between EMF long-term exposure and neuropsychiatric disorders including depression. This study aims to investigate a commercially available EMF- blocker blanket, called Sleepgift, that claims helping people to have a better sleep and improved health. We will investigate the Sleepgift efficacy on adults' quality of sleep and their vital signals as a measure of their well-being in a placebo-controlled single- blind cross-over designed study. Participants will sleep in our sleep lab at baseline and then 10 days later with the Sleepgift blanket after using it every night for the past 10 consecutive days. Participants will be given two blankets for each cycle of the study as it is a cross-over designed study: one Sleepgift and one regular blanket; they will not know which one is real or sham. There will be one-month washout period between the two cycles of the cross-over study. We aim to enroll 30 adults for the study. Participants' sleep quality will be measured by the established device called Prodogy; their vital signals will also be measured and monitored through the night. The collected data will be analyzed statistically for any significant effect of the Sleepgift blanket on sleep quality and vital signals such as heart's rhythm and heart rate variability.
This is a randomized controlled trial over 5 years, using Stage II of the NIH-defined stage model for behavioral intervention development. We will evaluate the efficacy of the sleep intervention program (Care2Sleep) on sleep, health status measures, and quality of life (for dyads), and inflammation (for caregivers only). Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to in-person Care2Sleep, telehealth Care2Sleep, or to an in-person education control group. The Care2Sleep programs and the control education program will consist of five sessions. The intervention and control programs will begin after baseline assessment and randomization. Posttreatment assessments will be performed immediately after the last session and at 6-month follow-up.
Patients treated for breast cancer frequently complain of sleep disturbances, about 40% of them. Of the sleep disturbances experienced by patients, insomnia is the most common complaint. The prevalence of insomnia complaints is higher in breast cancer patients compared to other types of cancer, and is also higher than in the general population (between 20% and 70% in breast cancer patients vs 30% in the general population). A recent study indicates that sleep complaints concern 25% of patients even before diagnosis, and 46% (including 18% complaining of insomnia) at the time of diagnosis, showing the negative impact of the announcement of the pathology on the subjective quality of sleep, and particularly on symptoms suggestive of insomnia. However, objective information on a modification of sleep patterns in breast cancer remains scarce and does not allow us to conclude. In particular, previous studies have focused only on the effects of chemotherapy and have not always included a control group, limiting the significance of their results. The links with cognitive and psychopathological processes and the underlying mechanisms are not clearly demonstrated in this pathology. Finally, taking into account patients' complaints, it appears necessary to limit sleep disorders in breast cancer in order to improve patients' quality of life using non-medicinal and easy-to-implement approaches.
Today, insufficient sleep has become a growing global problem. Sleep is essential to health and changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Inadequate and low-quality sleep also increases the risk for age-related cognitive decline and disease conditions. More importantly, due to COVID-19 health emergency, there is a significant increase of psychological distress and symptoms of mental illness and a worsening of quality of sleep. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate the way of improving sleep quality, in particular during and post COVID-19 period, in older adults. One of the possible strategies in improving sleep quality with lifestyle modification is having higher-protein diet. However, this effect has not been fully elucidated in older adults. In addition, the effect of type of dietary protein on sleep quality is inconclusive and there is no clinical trial which assessed the differential response in sleep quality between animal-sourced protein vs. plant-sourced protein. Therefore, the purpose of this research project is to assess the impact of different types of higher dietary protein intake on sleep quality in Singapore older adults. Findings from the proposed research will provide the scientific evidence of the beneficial effects of regularly consuming higher-protein diet on sleep quality in Singapore older adults. In addition, this research may validate the differential effect of different type of dietary protein on sleep quality. The results from the proposed research will also assist a practical guidance of nutritional behaviour changes providing sleep promoting effects to a large proportion of the Singapore population.
The trial aims to evaluate the effects of an integrated form of mindfulness-based Tai Chi Chuan (MBTCC) program and the underlying mechanisms of the beneficial effects on sleep disturbance over 12-month follow-up in community-dwelling elderly people.
