Filter by:The purpose of the proposed research is to conduct an efficacy trial of the Family Check-Up (FCU) Online to prevent emotional and behavioral disorders among middle-school students at-risk for disability during the transition back to school after the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health and behavior problems are at epidemic proportions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the highest rates in adolescents and children with disabilities. We propose to evaluate the efficacy of the FCU Online, a school-based, ecological approach to family intervention and risk reduction, across a group of students at-risk or identified with disability during the middle school years. The FCU Online for middle school youth has been evaluated in a randomized trial in prior research during the development of the program but has never been tested as a large-scale, school-based intervention or delivered by providers working in schools. It has recently been adapted for COVID-19 and includes new modules on coping with stress and home-to-school engagement to support the return to school after COVID-19 for students at-risk. Students in schools will be identified for services using indicators that are natural to the school environment (attendance, office discipline referrals, and grades), and will be followed for 2 years. We predict that engagement in the FCU Online will be associated with student reductions in emotional and behavior problems, improvements in academic skills, and improvements in attendance. Parenting skills such as home-to-school communication, positive parenting, and behavioral routines will be tested as mediators of intervention efficacy.
The long-term goal is to develop effective parenting strategies to facilitate optimal child development for mothers suffering with PPD symptoms. The overall objective for this application is to study whether this program combined with online depression treatment leads to more responsive parenting (target) and signals improved child language, socioemotional and cognitive development (outcomes) compared to depression treatment alone. Findings from this application can be used to inform a future study to test the effectiveness and implementation of this social media-based parenting program.
This is a cross-sectional study of a randomized clinical trial to investigate nutritional aspects of pre-scholar aged children born preterm submitted to an early stimulation program versus conventional care program. The preterm-born children participated in the project entitle "Early Intervention Program for Preterm Infants and Their Parents: establishing the impact at 18 Months Corrected Age" (NCT02835612), which performed a continuous early stimulation in very and extremely preterm infant's families in their first 12 to 18 months. In the present study, preterm born children currently with 3 to 6 years old and their mothers (or legal guardian) are once more invited to a one-day visit for a nutritional and clinical evaluation at the Clinical Research Center of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre/Brazil. In the consultation, preterm born children and theirs mothers are submitted to the following exams: body composition by electrical bioimpedance, clinical and physical evaluation, anthropometric measurements, and children's eating habits, eating behavior and parental educational style in food through specific questionnaires. Moreover, this study will also investigate a group of pre-scholar health children born at term to obtain reference values for variables analysed. The goal with these findings is to determine if an early stimulation program could present a positive impact in anthropometric outcomes and nutritional aspects in this more vulnerable preterm born population.
The proposed pilot randomized controlled trial will test the FACT (Families Addressing Cancer Together) intervention designed to improve parents' confidence and ability to talk about their cancer with their minor children. We will enroll 40 patients with cancer who have a minor child to participate in this single site, 6-week study. The primary hypothesis being tested is that an intervention that assists parents with their communication needs with their children can be feasible and acceptable when compared with a wait-list control condition.
The current study is a feasibility pilot of the Lausanne Trialogue Play paradigm Intervention - Brief (LTP-Brief), a family systems therapy implemented in a community mental health setting. We will study the ultrabrief, virtual therapy to assess the feasibility of a future pilot RCT. Feasibility metrics include resource, scientific, and management considerations, as well as an examination of pre-post change in future child and family outcomes of interest.
Objective: To investigate the effect of FCR as part of the FICare principles during hospital stay, on parental stress at discharge in parents of preterm or ill infants admitted to the neonatal ward for >7 days as compared to standard medical rounds (SMR) without parents as part of standard neonatal care (SNC).
A German version of the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS, Barnes & Olson, 1982) will be validated in a large sample of children (10-18 years) and their parents. As a secondary objective, the association of communication quality, children's somatic symptoms and mental health will be explored.
Studies underline both the importance of the link and contact that occurs in the earliest days of life and the need to involve parents early with their premature child. However, the impact of parental nutrition on the later active nutrition and on the quality of parent-child interactions is currently unknown. PREMIAM study investigates whether active parental participation in enteral nutrition improves the interactions between the infant and his parents, making them more sensitive to their baby's signals and promoting their relational adjustment.
Millions of U.S. parents have experienced trauma, putting them at risk for maladaptive parenting practices, which then confer vulnerabilities to their children. This study aims to enhance understanding of how parental emotional dysregulation associated with traumatic stress impedes effective parenting. The study employs neurophysiological methods (electroencephalogram; EEG) to address some of the challenges inherent in the study of emotion (particularly in trauma-exposed individuals) and to identify potential biomarkers of traumatic stress and response to intervention.
Every year, 1 million women cease breastfeeding (BF) before 6 months, the minimum time required for optimal maternal well-being and infant's health, physical growth, and development. The highest rate of BF cessation occurs within 3 weeks after birth, with 30% of women ceasing BF due to acute breast and nipple pain (BNP). BNP is a complex and understudied biobehavioral phenomenon involving nociceptive signalling that stimulates multiple pain pathways. Women who experience BNP beyond BF initiation report lower BF self-efficacy a key predictor of BF at 6 months, increased maternal distress symptoms, and may differ across races contributing to differences in early BF cessation rates. The investigators developed and tested a 6-week nurse-led and participant-informed, Breastfeeding and Breast and Nipple Pain Self-Management (BSM) intervention guided by the Individual and Family Self-Management Theory. Aligned with the needs and preferences elicited from a diverse sample of BF participants, the investigators used a cloud-based platform, to deliver BF knowledge and skills, and provided support through nurse-led text-based communication to decrease BNP, increase BF self-efficacy, decrease burdensome face-to-face visits, and increase adaptive coping behaviors. Participants in the BSM intervention group reported significantly reduced BNP intensity at 1 and 2 weeks which predicted increased BF self-efficacy and decreased anxiety at 6 weeks. Based on these promising results, the investigators propose to examine the efficacy of the BSM intervention in an R56 RCT, Promoting Self-Management of Breast and Nipple Pain Using Technology (PROMPT) for Breastfeeding Women to decrease BNP intensity and interference and increase BF exclusivity. The study will reproduce and extend the pilot findings by exploring in a diverse population of BF participants, how participants' pain sensitivity affects BNP. The study will explore the moderating role of BNP, and maternal well-being symptoms of fatigue, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and sleep, pain, pain coping, and maternal self-efficacy, on BF exclusivity. Participants (N = 222) intending to breastfeed will be randomized to the BSM intervention or the attention control group with assessments performed at baseline, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 weeks. Study results will advance knowledge on the BSM intervention, with direct implications for nurse-designed and led self-management interventions in clinical settings or health care systems.
