Filter by:Few evidence-based programs exist to support children and families affected by sociopolitical conflict, despite documented evidence of their heightened risk for emotional and behavioral adjustment problems associated with exposure to conflict and violence at multiple levels of the social ecology (e.g., political, community, and family). Thus, a critical need exists for an evidence-based program to ameliorate the impact of political violence on the overall well-being of children and families. The current study will conduct a rigorous evaluation of a theoretically-driven, family-based intervention program in Palestine, including both the West Bank and Gaza. Firmly grounded in the cultural context of Palestine but with broad implications for individuals exposed to sociopolitical violence, the long-term goal of this project is to provide a family-focused intervention program (Promoting Positive Family Futures; PPFF) that may facilitate individuals' sense of safety and support in the context of chronic adversity. The objective is to evaluate this intervention program in the context of a randomized clinical trial (RCT) in the West Bank and Gaza (N=300). The central hypothesis is that the program will have direct positive effects on family conflict, parent psychopathology and parental security in the family as well as on adolescent emotional security in the family, with cascading effects on adolescent adjustment. Consistent with family systems theory, we further hypothesize that treatment effects on parents will mediate on the effects of the treatment on adolescent adjustment. The rationale is that bolstering resilience in family systems is a key approach to promoting positive functioning in families exposed to chronic violence. The hypothesis will be evaluated with three specific aims: 1) evaluate the efficacy of an evidence-based family support program; 2) examine process models of treatment change, and 3) examine interrelations between parent and child functioning. To achieve these aims, the study will be an RCT employing a longitudinal design (N=300) with multi-method assessments at baseline (T1), post-test (T2), 6-month follow-up (T3) and 12-month follow-up (T4). Families included in the study will be evenly divided between the West Bank (n=150) and Gaza Strip (n=150). Families will be randomized into the intervention condition (PPFF) or treatment as usual (TAU). Each territory will have an implementing partner, and implementing partners and investigators will work together to ensure the study procedures are implemented in parallel across sites. Data collection will be conducted by trained research staff from a third-party survey and policy research organization. The proposal seeks to shift current research and clinical paradigms in these contexts by employing novel theoretical concepts, approaches, and methodologies. The contribution will be significant by 1) further developing new directions for empirically-based interventions in these high-risk contexts, and 2) advancing a relatively brief, cost-effective program that can be readily implemented to help children and families exposed to continuing conflict in Palestine, with the potential to be brought to scale in other contexts.
Young families need additional institutional support to help them meet the challenges of parenthood. Prenatal clinics are well situated to address some of their needs by expanding services to include fathers. The Father Inclusive Prenatal Care (FIPC) model is designed to prepare young men for the challenges of parenting by supporting the development of their relationship skills as part of routine prenatal healthcare. This approach involves assessing expectant fathers and mothers with a "parent prep-check" (PPC) to identify their needs and then offer services to address those needs and prepare them for parenthood. Services include: (1) parent education about how to understand and care for infants, and how to build secure parent-child bonds; (2) an evidence-based co-parenting program to strengthen and stabilize their family; and (3) educational and employment support designed to help young parents find and keep living wage jobs. The project will be implemented through several community based healthcare sites that are well positioned to engage young fathers through their prenatal clinics. To extend the reach and accessibility of the model, trainings and most services will be available online. As a result of participating in this project it is expected that young couples will have better co-parenting relationships and be better prepared to take care of their infants.
In Sierra Leone, poverty and challenges with family functioning can lead to family separation, and children may go to live on the street or enter residential care institutions/orphanages. Helping Children Worldwide (HCW), a non-profit organization with over 20 years of experience in Sierra Leone, has developed a two-part Family Strengthening Program delivered by their program partners in Sierra Leone, the Child Reintegration Centre, to improve families financial literacy and attachment between caregivers and children, with the ultimate goal of preventing family separation. The hypothesis of this study is that the Family Strengthening Program program is effective at (1) changing parenting behaviors, (2) improving emotional regulation, (3) improving caregiver-child attachment, and (4) improving financial literacy in dyads consisting of children ages 9-13 and their caregivers.
Investigation of the efficacy of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for the psychological treatment of parental stress in relatives of people with intellectual disabilities
Consistent use of continuous glucose monitors (CGM) has the potential to improve glycemic control and related type 1 diabetes (T1D) health outcomes, however young adolescents with T1D are the least likely age group to begin and sustain use of CGM. The proposed study will conduct a feasibility trial of a behavioral intervention designed to optimize use of CGM in adolescents specifically targeting underrepresented populations in diabetes technology research.
Aims of the study. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the ChildTalks+ intervention and to implement it in education and practice. By delivering the ChildTalks+ intervention, i.e. educating parents about the transgenerational transmission of the disorder, informing them about the impact on their children, strengthening their parenting competencies, supporting communication within the family and informing COPMI about their parents' mental disorder, listening to their needs and providing emotional and social support to the family, the investigators expect the following outcomes: improved family communication, including children's awareness of their parents' mental health problems, improved overall well-being of COPMI, heightened perceptions of parental competence, increased family protective factors, including strengthened social support, sustained over time. Part of the intervention consists of early identification of social-emotional problems in children and referral for further professional help. The research questions the investigators will focus on are: - What are the effects of the ChildTalks+ intervention in families where parents have a mental health disorder? - Is the ChildTalks+ intervention feasible for therapists who treat patients with mental disorder? - Is the ChildTalks+ intervention feasible in families where one parent has an eating disorder? - Should the ChildTalks+ intervention be modified for this group of families where parent has an eating disorders?
This randomized controlled microtrial, not just focus on parental (and child) responsiveness but also on an underlying physiological mechanism hypothesized to contribute to heightened susceptibility to parenting interventions.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents read to their children as often as possible beginning in infancy and limits on screen time at all ages, yet many families question the value of reading to infants and are uncertain how to do so, and screen time is rising. This proposal is highly relevant to public health in that it involves a "how-to" approach to reading with infants and limiting screen time that is delivered during pediatric well-child visits within an established program (Reach Out and Read) using innovative materials: specially designed children's books and animated educational videos featured in a new mobile app (Reading Bees). It addresses important research gaps, compliments existing programs and empowers families, particularly from underserved backgrounds, to read more interactively and enjoyably with their babies, limit screen time, and improve early literacy skills, relationships and health outcomes.
This trial examines the usefulness of two educational programs for parents with late-stage cancer who have a 5 - 17 year old child. The programs are designed to enhance the quality of the parent-child relationship and add to the parent's confidence in managing the impact of their cancer on their child. Educational programs may reduce anxiety and depression and improve the well-being and quality of life of parents with advanced cancers and their children. Recruitment occurs nationally via referral to the Fred Hutch/University of Washington Cancer Consortium team.
The PLAYshop program is a novel, brief, theory-based, parent-focused physical literacy intervention, that can help mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical activity of children from diverse and vulnerable families who have been disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Primary Research Question: Among vulnerable families (e.g., lower socioeconomic status), does the PLAYshop program increase parental capability, opportunity, and motivation to support preschool-aged children's physical literacy development, compared to controls?
