There are about 831 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Uganda. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
REACH is a prospective, phase I/II open-label dose escalation trial of hydroxyurea for children with confirmed SCA between 3 and 10 years of age. The short-term goal is to obtain critical pilot data regarding the feasibility, safety, and benefit of hydroxyurea for children with SCA in multiple distinct research settings in Africa. Based on that information, the longer-term goal is to make hydroxyurea more widely available for children with SCA in Africa, particularly those identified with SCA through expanded newborn screening programs.
This is a mixed-methods program evaluation from a health systems and policy perspective, involving (i) stakeholder analysis, (ii) policy-implementation gap analysis, and (iii) comparative country case studies. This study aims to understand how national oxygen strategies achieve impact at national, and subnational level, across country contexts, at what cost. The the investigators seek to: 1. Involve policymakers, implementers (including private sector), and medical oxygen users in identifying challenges and understanding potential solutions to medical oxygen access; 2. Generate new data on how medical oxygen systems work and can be improved from multiple perspectives; 3. Draw lessons on medical oxygen that can directly inform national and global practice and policy. This study will be conducted in 6 of the 9 countries participating in the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) led Medical Oxygen Implementation (MOXY) program (Uganda, Nigeria, Rwanda, Liberia, Lao PDR, Cambodia). Key informants will be selected representing government, non-governmental agencies, professional associations, private sector, and civil society. This study will be completed over 4 years, with timelines varying between country study sites.
This RCT will take place at health centres and their affiliated schools and community immunization centers overseen by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) as well as at the Makerere/Mulago/Columbia Adolescent Health Clinic in Kampala. The investigators will assess the impact of vaccine text message and automated phone reminders on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination initiation and completion.
The purpose of this study is long-term evaluation of long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB LA) for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in eligible participants who have completed DAIDS (Division of AIDS) sponsored studies HPTN 083 and HPTN 084 and associated sub-studies. Participants will continue receiving CAB LA and be followed for new HIV diagnosis, SAEs (serious adverse events), Grade 3 and Grade 4 ISRs (injection site reactions), and AEs (adverse events) leading to withdrawal.
The primary objective of the study is to demonstrate and quantify the effectiveness of a spatial repellent (SR) product, in reducing malaria infection in humans under operational program conditions in a humanitarian assistance context. The design will be a cluster Randomized Control Trial (cRCT) representing an operational research study.
The goal of this stepped-wedge cluster randomized control trial is to assess whether a Ugandan community-based intervention for young fathers (ages 18-25 years) of children ages 0-3 years impacts fathers' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding positive parenting practices, father-child interaction, harsh physical punishment of children, and intimate partner violence.
Screen participants attending 11 healthcare facilities in Mubende District for psychological distress using the locally validated Luganda or English version of the WHO- Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Those individuals found to have significant psychological distress (a score of 6 and above) will be offered Ebola+D intervention [a stepped care collaborative delivery model to address the medium- to long-term EBOLA associated psychological Distress and psychosocial problems] . A cohort of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) affected individuals accessing the Ebola +D mental health intervention will be recruited and followed up for 12 months with assessments at three time points; baseline, 3 months and 12 months.
Recent data indicate that 1 in 5 women worldwide undergo Caesarean sections (CS) and in most regions CS rates are increasing. Sub-Saharan Africa has the lowest CS rate at 3.5%, compared to a global average of 19.1%. However, there is emerging evidence for a double burden in low-income countries, with low national CS rates masking both overuse and underuse. While national CS rates may remain stagnant, disaggregation by wealth, location, and education level reveal disparities in rate. The purpose of this study is to understand the Caesarean delivery in Uganda by examining CS rates, factors associated with CS and maternal and neonatal outcomes across institutions using the Robson classification.
REAL-MOXY is a set of 5 mixed methods studies designed to understand how oxygen and pulse oximetry are used (or not used) at a facility level, to identify opportunities and barriers for strengthening oxygen systems for beneficiaries, users and managers.
This is a randomized controlled trial with 8 schools (4 intervention and 4 wait-list control schools) including 160 caregivers (80 teachers and 80 parents), with the aim of pilot testing the implementation process, feasibility, acceptability, usage patterns, and efficacy of the mHealth Toolkit for Wellness & Empowering Lives of School Community (mWEL) in Uganda. The mWEL-App is a preventive intervention tool for teachers and parents as a self-help support modality. Caregivers who need support in navigating the toolkit will be supported by P-CHWs. The investigators hypothesize that: 1) relative to the control, caregivers receiving the mWEL will have better efficacy outcomes (mental health literacy, and mental health outcomes); and 2) mWEL implementation will have high acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility.
